Pet Peeve

Yeah, I hear this. I think the only correct usage of a "pair of strings" might be for a 12-string guitar, relating to the 2 adjacent strings. Or, if one buys a couple replacement lighter gauge strings instead of a full set. A "pair of X-strings" might apply.

I don't know that anyone I've ever met described a "set of strings" as a pair of strings though.

A similar pet peeve is from our UK-based mountain biking friends. The thing that your front wheel attaches to on a bicycle is not a "pair of forks" - it's a "fork"! (unless you're running 2 front wheels.) :D But it's all good, as long as you're playing guitar and riding a bike.

I get just as perturbed when I go to a fast food joint and their menu says "medium" and "large" for drink sizes.... HOW CAN YOU HAVE MEDIUM IF YOU DON'T HAVE SMALL?!

I worked at Guitar Center for a while back in 1999. Yeah, customers would come in asking for "a pair of 10's"

I would said, "We don't sell shoes"

But...they do! Ironically not available in 10’s though.
