Pet Peeve

It's always drove me nuts... When talking about a set of strings someone says: "A pair of strings." No... That would imply that there were only 2 strings, and probably that they'd match.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone call it a 'pair', but that would be super annoying, agreed.

Yeah, I hear this. I think the only correct usage of a "pair of strings" might be for a 12-string guitar, relating to the 2 adjacent strings. Or, if one buys a couple replacement lighter gauge strings instead of a full set. A "pair of X-strings" might apply.

I don't know that anyone I've ever met described a "set of strings" as a pair of strings though.

I worked at Guitar Center for a while back in 1999. Yeah, customers would come in asking for "a pair of 10's" and would get upset when I reached in the single string bin.

A similar pet peeve is from our UK-based mountain biking friends. The thing that your front wheel attaches to on a bicycle is not a "pair of forks" - it's a "fork"! (unless you're running 2 front wheels.) But it's all good, as long as you're playing guitar and riding a bike.
