Lately I have been noticing ( turn 58 in November) that my lower back sometimes is in excruciating pain when arising out of bed. I have to sit on the edge of the bed and do a few stretches but once my body is in motion I am usually good.

Do you have any back issues and how do you cope with some relief as in pain killers or not? I don’t take any of them but got desperate and ate a Tylenol 3. That put me in a nice sleep but the pain was still there. I think the key is to stabilize your core muscles including you glutes hamstrings an your abs. I don’t want to go through this ever again. Minor pain is tolerable but intense pain is not. Reminds me the beginning of a migraine.

I am nowhere near a youngster. However, I have been dealing with back pain for most of my life. I had an accident back in my early to mid 20's that cause the herniation of L4 and L5 in my back. Thankfully I had a doctor back then that was more interested in rehabilitating me than operating on me and he taught me how to take care of it. To this day, I have not had to have surgery on my back for this issue. I know that I have to keep myself limber. It gets tougher as I get older. Your body stiffens up naturally as you age. You have to keep using and stretching your muscles to remind them what they are there for or they go from elastic to plastic.

When my back starts to cause me pain, stretching is exactly what I do. Walking helps a lot as well. I twist myself while laying down and if my back doesn't move and make a few cracking noises, I know pain is in the future if I don't start stretching right then. I have learned the signs for my own situation and know them so well that I know the early stages and what to do to keep it from getting worse.

Because I am on my feet constantly I log on my tracker always between 15k and 20kdaily.The floor is concrete with no padding at all at work

I did try to do a split right down to street level last night and the (crane) was called in to pick me up. Just to see if I could. Flexibility is”my forte but not jumping into an exercise cold.

I am going to look up some core exercises and start today.

I am not any meds at all except for my panic attacks. Amazing improvement. But it’s a life sentence of drugs. Idk, as long it makes better feel 30 +. You must look after yourself because no one will unless you have a mother that continually dotes on you. I don’t!!

Building your core will definitely help a lot. I need to get back to doing that. Between that and stretching I am usually able to keep mine under control.

Now that I am of a certain age (>58) I’ve learned through empirical evidence that the greatest threat is bed/sleeping. Way too often I go to bed perfectly fine, only to wake up with an ailment. A few years back I went to bed fine and woke up to a partially torn bicep. Last week I woke up to a throbbing right knee.

I have always been and continue to be a geriatric jock in search of eternal youth (hence the boy in Tiboy). I bicycle 8,000 miles/year, hit the weights 3x/week, extensive core work, stretch, weekly chiropractic and medical massage. And still I wake up to new ailments on a regular basis. The cure: stop getting older or ditch the bed/sleeping.

Actually thinking of getting a deep tissue massage. I exercise, eat right and treat my body very well.

FAT ACCEPTANCE NO THANK YOU.
Have you seen them? They will die very young. Just facts and nothing but.

I am having back issues at the moment and seeing my chiropractor to get things out back in alignment regularly. I’ve always found a good chiropractor can have you feeling like a million bucks.

Right now he has me doing this workout a couple of times a week to build core strength, which will help me stay in alignment eventually. It’s a free YouTube video, so feel free to annoy it as well. Start slow (first 6-8 minutes every other day) then increase to the whole workout everyday when you can.

Have you thought about changing your mattress? How old is your mattress? Considering we spend 1/4 to 1/3 of our lives on the mattress, it is critical to overall health, especially back and joint issues. Just a thought, hope you are able to find a solution!

Or maybe I will flip the mattress again. In all honestly I feel like a cripple when waking up and once I get going then I am.
Flipping good

Flipping the mattress is a good idea (assuming it is built as a flipable mattress), but if that mattress is 10 years old or more, I would say get a new one. We flip our mattress about every 6 months, but it is definitely time for a new one and we have been shopping the past few months. Ours is 15 years old. If the pain is when you get out of bed (and none when you go to bed), mattress problem is 95% certain IMO! Take all with a grain of salt though, I am no expert!

Decades ago, every fall I would be out of commission due to back issues for a couple weeks, during which I’d be taking pain killers and muscle relaxers. Finally, I got with a doc who said that I’d never get past it until I strengthened my back and stomach muscles. After beginning to exercise more, those issues never came back. Now that I’m 69 and have been retired for 7 years (not doing any hard labor) I get a twinge every now and then. Got to get back on the exercise.

This Is My Experience And What I Did To Help Me. I Share In Hopes It May Help Others. Flexibility Is Key For A Lot Of Things As Is Hydration. I Have Found Hamstrings, Hip Flexors, Core Strength And Good Posture Are Crucial Tie-Ins For Back Pain When I Neglect Those Areas. The Lighter I Am The Better All Of My Joints Feel And I Have Had Some Joint Injuries. I Am Always Mindful Of How I Sit, Drive, Watch TV, Use My Computer/Laptop, Play Guitar, Etc. I Notice When I Stay In Alignment I Have Far Less Troubles And Pains. Stretching And The Foam Roller Are A HUGE Help. Good Pillows And Mattresses Are Vitally Important. Another Very Important Thing To Do For A Lot Of Reasons Is Spending Time Grounding Yourself. Get Your Bare Feet In The Grass Or Dirt As Much As Possible Daily. It Is Amazing What It Does For Your Body. Good Sleep Is Of Course Another Thing. When I Do All This Stuff Daily I Feel Great. If I Slack Off, It Catches Up With Me. I Have Learned How To Stay In Front Of Most Of These "Ailments" And Doing This Works For Me. Hopefully It Helps Those Reading This As Well. :)

Lola, while it may be your mattress, I've found these exercises to be helpful for the lower back...also the Feldenkrais method for lower back. No medications required, and will relieve pain caused by strained muscles. Research the feldenkrais method first...Bob & Brad are OK, but may not do exactly what you'd like...

Some good advice so far. Maybe some CBD salve would help. My wife swears by it. I think she said 500mg or more, but I can find out tomorrow if you're interested.

I just get black out drunk. That kills any pain until I'm sober and feel my fall injuries from the night before. Then I just start over, rinse and repeat. :p I kid I kid.

I'm 56 (a week from today) and so much younger than you :p

A new mattress was integral. There was a certain point where laying for 7 hours sleeping would result in much body pain when getting up.

The other is I started doing bridges pushups and situps...low reps until I build some stamina in the core (I know pushups aren't major core build exercises)

That's pretty much what others have said. New sleeping pad and exercise.

Ibuprofen and things help and in my world are just masking an issue that eventually needs to be dealt with. They are amazing to get through a temporary need though, amen!

As far as PRS, my Core Starla does NOT hurt me, at all. Strengthen your core, back or PRS!

Beat ya to 56 by 24 days!

I've had 2 back injuries and it's always very susceptible to overdoing it and great pain.
I had back spasms ( your whole body locks up and you can't move) that put me in the hospital . My solution :
A good mattress , regular SLOW stretching ( yoga if you can handle it) , hydration , Glucosamine & Chondroitin ,CDB

And a warning from one of the many specialist I've been to : Chronic Back pain can also be a sign of ...Kidney Disease.
If you have back pain that does NOT seem muscle/bone related to an event .. and you enjoy alchohol, or like me had a habit of regular Ibuprofen/ Acetopminiphine use ... do yourself a favor and have a blood test and look at the EGFR numbers. Over >60* is healthy .... Acute kidney failure accurs at 15% .. Due to an intestinal blockage repaired via surgery .. mine hit 13% , thankfully I'm OK now. The associated back pain feels very much like you lifted something TOO heavy ....

I'm no longer allowed ANY pain killer but CDB family ....except for surgery
