Mark Holcomb Ltd Edition

AWW HELL YISS! Congrats dude!

I'll post a review tonight, but all I can say is WOW. I literally don't know what else to say at this point in time. I've owned and played at least 10 different PRS USA models... this takes that experience to the next level. Everything is easy... just... Wow.

I always enjoy hearing that about a guitar I've purchased! I am eager to dig into the Alpha/Omega pickups, as well as the 20-inch radius board. I'm VERY curious about that. It's getting 2-day shipped, so I'll see it soon enough.

Congrats to both of you guys with Holcombs on the way! Can't wait for you to get them and be as floored as I am! and don't forget that glorious NGD porn! :D

sooooo, I take it by the silence in here it means that everyone else hasn't been able to put their Holcombs down either? Not a day has passed that I haven't played this thing since I got it. It's just been an unreal experience for me. Excited to hear everyone elses findings with their Holcomb.

I forget who i was speaking to Saturday at the Factory, but one of the Employees did tell me that they had more orders for the Holcomb than they did for the Warings which i thought was interesting.

Played the Holcomb fresh out of the box this afternoon. It's unlike anything I've ever owned. The 25.5 inch scale is a welcome playing field, but what really got me on this guitar is the body thickness. All of my other PRS core or PS guitars are McCarty thickness, so I really enjoyed feeling the tighter fit with the slightly thinner body. The Neck Carve on the Holcomb is listed as Pattern Thin, but it feels thicker and meatier than my Tremonti. The pickups are very unique sounding, and lower output than I expected, but they speak nicely. Once I'm done backing up my phone I'll post some pics.

BeHolcomb!!!!

awesome top man! love how it's all squiggly and kinda swirly. Thanks for sharing!

And I'm glad you pointed out the neck thickness. I too felt it was a little thicker than I was expecting, but it actually ended up being very welcome feel. Also I love the idea of having as much wood as possible while still maintaining comfort. This guitar nailed the balance perfectly I felt! just enough meat on the neck to help with the overall tone yet thin enough to appeal to my taste for thinner necks. As for the body I wasn't sure since I didn't immediately have another PRS to compare to but I also felt it was thinner than most others I've played which I loved. it sits so comfortably no matter what position. And yeah, the pickups are very unique! Seymour Duncan finally put them up for sale so I'm thinking of getting a set for an old Ibanez Musician I have that needs a new sound. I think they'll be perfect for it's meaty body. Me personally, I've always preferred a brighter sound at the neck position (thus why I currently have a bright bridge pickup in the neck position) and I think these Duncans nail my ideal sound perfectly.

Thank you for sharing pics ViperDoc! I am wondering what kind of amps you guys are playing through with your Holcomb?

Neat to hear officially, but not entirely surprising to be honest. The Periphery fans who post on FB or some of the guitar forums I frequent tend to be more gear-obsessed than fans of other bands like BTBAM are typically. ;) Misha/Mark/Jake can post about something on one of those venues and their guitar-playing fans do tend to want the same gear to get that kind of sound so they go crazy trying to buy the guitar/rig to match. I can't say I see the same happening often for BTBAM crowd, lots of folks focused on their playing but not as much excitement about their tone and gear, just IMHO. :)

Yeah to be honest, as I'm not an uber thin neck guy, I was stoked to find the Pattern Thin carve on mine to be a happy middle ground. Definitely slimmer than some of my other PRS with Pattern/Pattern Regular necks, but not so thin that I get hand cramps from playing them. :D Big fan of this thing! \m/

I've used it on the following (I took it amp shopping one day, I don't own all these):

Mesa Triple Recto and Mesa 4x12 cab
Notes: Sounds awesome but isn't bright enough for my tastes...tis more of the amp than the guitar)

Mesa Mark V and Mesa 1x12 cab
Notes: Probably what I'm going to buy next. Really like the versatility of the amp due to the many wattage settings and fantastic EQ

Blackstar HT-40 combo
Notes: Sounds really good but not very well defined in the upper mid range and the highs aren't quite bright enough for me. British sound is awesome, American sound not quite what I was looking for...the blend of the two was nice for some stuff but still not what I was looking for.

Blackstar HT-5 mini stack 1x12
Notes: same as above but even more "muddy" sounding

Fender M-80 1x12 combo
Notes: This is my current practice amp...and I can't believe how good it sounds considering it has no EQ for the dirty channel and clean has no gain control...but I get some really awesome tone out of this amp with the Holcomb)

Fender 212 combo 2x12
Notes: meh...it's an amp. clean is clean, dirty is ok but everything is almost a little too bright and crisp. but to be fair, I didn't really spend the proper time to get it dialed in...I was kinda turned off right away and just never spent time with it.

Vox Amplug Metal (sounds so freakin HUGE in headphones...need to send this through a mixed to bigger speakers just for fun)
Notes: just for jamming in bed but the distortion sounds amazing! no real clean unless you dial the gain all the way down and turn the vol on the guitar down to about 3-4, and even then you still get some gain. But if you want to mess around with some gnarly dirty, this thing is well worth $40

Apogee Jam (sounds great through all of the different amp/cab models in Jamup Pro)
I'm blown away by this app and device combo. I hate that I can't charge my phone while I use it but other than that, it's so much fun! and the record tool is awesome. no more forgetting riffs waiting for my pro tools rig to fire up.

I think there's more but I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll get back to you.

OK, though of some more:

Orange Crush Pro CR60C
Notes: Great British sound! Really like these Orange amps but the place I went only had this one which doesn't have a footswitch option (who doesn't want a footswitch option for a multi-channel amp?). But really liked the tone on these however I typically prefer more of an American sound so this isn't in the running for my main amp.

PRS Archon 50 combo
Notes: Unbelievable tone! only thing that I preferred about the Mark V over this was the warmth. Otherwise, I really liked this amp! The Holcomb sounded amazing through it.

PRS Custom 20 combo
Notes: Pales in comparison to the Archon tonally but still a really good sounding amp. great clean channel.

and I think there's still more but I can't recall at the moment.

I feel that's a spot on observation. I've never seen such gear-obsessed fans as the Periphery crowd. it's almost like they like the sound/gear more than the music. lol.

I agree. I have a Jackson that has one of their ultrathin necks and it's a little on the too thin side. I'm really digging the feel of this pattern thin neck!

I play a Mesa Mark V through a mesa 1x12 cab with a c90 speaker. I'm going to add a v30 1x12 to mix the speaker voicing. Mind you, these are REAL and not modeled amp/cab combos. I've thought of adding an Engl or Triple Rectifier, but I'm happy with the Mark V for now. Heard good things about the old Peavey 5150.

Looks fantastic ViperDoc, and thanks for the review!

Curious: for you folks that have received them, how are the ebony boards looking?

They look dark.

They also play differently, but the 16 inch board radius is still something I'm getting used to. I'm accustomed to the 10 inch. The tone is much brighter than any of my other guitars. With so many unique elements to this axe, it's difficult to say which is responsible. I'm enjoying it so far.

My ebony board is beautiful. Not quite as shiny as it looks in some of the promo photos I've seen but I'd imagine those were oiled or something.
