Might as well go for the whole enchilada!

Amps! Let’s discuss. What amps have you owned in past? What is your one to play on? Do you like a combo, or a head an a cabinet? Do you like tube or digital?

Share your wealth of knowledge.

Axe FM3 here. That's it. All digital. The FM3 convinced me I didn't need my Mark V 25 anymore and I parted with that this past weekend. I will not be buying another tube amp. Modeling has come far enough to even sway me. There is something cool about having everything in a little box versus an amp stack with a bunch of pedals. The turning point for me was when I was really craving Marshall sounds and sought out a 50w JVM. Had to be real with myself and decide if I really wanted multiple amps taking up space in my smallish home space (I hate owning big houses). Now I just turn a dial and it's Marshall, Mesa, whatever.

I was a tube guy but I'm city dweller. Figured I'd pick up a Kemper to "try" out several amps since I don't have the space for a wall of amps. To my surprise I like it so much its converting me.. Something I never thought would happen but it's mostly all I use now.

First amp was a Peavey solid state 2x12 combo, couldn’t dial in a tone that I liked, but I was convinced when I bought it that I could!

A friend offered me a Boogie, from memory or was a iv or v 90 watt. It was way more than I could afford and I couldn’t justify it at the time. This would have been about 1990.

Four years later I bought a Boogie Studio 22 for about the same money!

I’ve had that amp ever since.

As you can see, I use it with a (close back) Laney 1X12 extension cab, when playing live.

Sold one amp in 44 years. Heck, I’ve sold one piece of gear, being that amp, in 44 years! A mid 80s Fender Twin II. Gigged it until I discovered Mesa/Boogie and never looked back. Then a few years later (23 to be exact) I discovered PRS CAD amps. My Super Dallas is a magical beast!

My Boogie MkIII came as a combo but I also have a head shell and the rack mount kit. It has been everything, gone everywhere and I have the back aches to prove it. The SuperD is a head. Also have an old Bassman 100 currently with my brother but it has seen a bunch of action, too.

Then came the Kemper…

It’s a freak of fortune that I’ve had such great amps.

I have owned a LOT of great amps over the years. Thinking about it, I feel pretty darned privileged. I've owned Fenders, Marshalls, Mesas, Voxes, Peaveys, Customs, Traynors...I've been a constant amp flipper/trader (Whore?). Some of my very favorites are Peavey Classics (30s and 50s), Marshall JCM900, Mesa Rect-O-Verb, Fender Twin, 65 Amps Lil Whiskey...there have been so many.

I've tried digital - all Line 6 - POD XT, POD HD500, Helix LT, POD GO, Helix LT again...

Finally found the amp I've been looking for in the VHT D-50 - my Tie Dye Tower is amazing.

POST OF THE WEEK!

I like how the Dumble is listed under Miscellaneous!

My main amp for the last 16 years is my Cornford Carrera. This is a 6-8 watt single channel hand built hand wired combo that can run pretty much any output valve (has both 8 pin and 9 pin sockets). Apart from taking it to jam nights for a year or two early on its been my home amp and for this it's perfect. Can do nice cleans, can do plenty of gain and even more with something to boost it. But it's not particularly loud and I've got used to that over years. Recently, when I've had the house to myself, I've been cranking the volume up and found myself wanting more. I've got a 20 watt Cornford combo as well and whilst this is a lot louder I'm not so keen on it's overdrive voice - it's got a bit of harshness to it that the Carrera doesn't.
To this end last year I bought a bluguitar amp 1. 100watts of power but with a class D power amp doing the heavy lifting so much easier to dial in to whatever volume level you want (whisper to stadium). 4 channels running from clean, to plexi to high gain. It's really nearly there as well, probably 90% of what a full tube amp would give you and is probably indistinguishable in a mix.

My current go to amp is the Suhr PT15 IR with matching 212 cab. It has a clean,(with its own EQ) dirty (own EQ0 and what I call dirty plus channels. Channel 3 is the same as channel 2 but with separate volume and gain controls. Master volume and each channel has its own volume control. It has IR’s and can go direct. I don’t use the IR’s. It has a headphone jack for quiet playing. It’s definitely in the Marshall camp on the dirt side.

Yup... @matt3310 just whipped it out on us. :D

Inferiority complex...engaged.

Blackstar HT5R (for about a month)

Peavey Delta Blues (also for about a month)

Yamaha THR10II Wireless (only piece of gear I've ever broke even on when I sold it)

Boss Katana 100 MKII (current) I love this one. So it's a keeper.

Nothing to see here...carry on.

Currently I am all digital. It works for me. However, I do like tube amps and have owned many over the years:

My preferred favorites?

Rivera M60
Rivera S120
Rivera M100

Played and used those beginning in the early 90s. They were the ultimate for me. The next best were my Bad Cats.

Other past amps:

Bad Cat CubIVR HW
Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R
Marshall JCM800 2204
Marshall Artist 30
Marshall Jubilee 25/50
Fender Bassman 100
Fender Tremolux (63)
Fender Bassman (65)
Fender Bassman (58)
Fender Twin Reverb (71)
Yamaha T100
Yamaha T50
Soldano SLO100
Soldano Astroverb
Soldano SP77
Mesa Mark 5:25
Mesa MKIV
Kitty Hawk M1
Egnater Tweaker 15
Egnater Tweaker 40
Vox AC4
Vox Ac15c1
Blackstar HT40
Sunn Beta Lead

Lately I have been enjoying my Plugin Alliance amp sims. I get a lot of mileage off the VH4, Savage 120, and PT100. Ironically, I am loving them at the "edge of breakup" type tones. I mostly use "channel 2" on each. I find these really easy to dial in a killer sound. Go figure!

I’ve been a Boogie devotee since the 70s, and currently own three: Road King II 2x12, Nomad 55 4x10, California Tweed head & 1x12 cab. Still great amps, at least until the Big G bought them out. Time will tell on that.

The best discovery for me in many years of tube amp searching: the PRS HX/DA. Discussed in depth in this thread, it’s a jewel. I have two: a custom 50 watt head and one I swapped from a head to a 1x12 combo. GREAT amp. https://forums.prsguitars.com/threa...are-your-hxda-knowledge-with-the-world.44624/

T
he Cali Tweed above caused me to renew my appreciation of classic blackface Fenders, including my 64 Super Reverb and a Gearge Alessandro black-faced Deluxe Reverb RI (which I lovingly refer to as the Deluxe Refurb). Both are beautiful, classily American toned amps.

Since 2011, I’ve gigged with Fractal Audio Systems Axe Fx gear, currently the Axe Fx III Turbo. Outstanding tone and feel, spectacular effects and routing options, and super easy setup. Two cables, no mics, done. I use a RJM Mastermind GT/22 and a Mission Aero expression pedal to control it from stage front.

There’s another half dozen amps, and as many more cabs in the music space to mix and match. After the post by @matt3310 I no longer feel I am in any way overstocked!

Yeah, I use his guitar room pics as a tool to give my wife some perspective when she tells me I don't "need" any more gear.
