New guitar day........and WORST F'IN PACKAGING EVER!!!

I have shipped and received countless things over the years from high end guitars, motorcycles, collectibles, etc. and I just received a guitar that qualifies for what I consider the worst f'in packaging job EVER. the ENTIRE packaging of the guitar I got in consisted of 9 INCHES OF PACKING TAPE! Three inches per latch........the dude sent the actual case to me with a short piece of tape over each latch! When the FedEx guy handed me the case I thought he was joking or that the box got damaged in shipping. The guy could have at least wrapped the tape all the way around the case to make sure it did not flop open, or someone could EASILY open and remove the guitar from inside!

I opened it there in the store to make sure it was not replaced with a Squier or a phone book and I see the trem bar LAYING ON TOP OF THE FACE OF THE GUITAR! The inside of the case looked like a yak was sleeping inside it as there was white hair everywhere inside of it. The guitar was filthy. I have never shipped a guitar without wiping it down and making sure the inside of the case was clean, I man that is friggin common courtesy!

Well now for the good news......once I calmed down and looked over the guitar it looks good. 1989 PRS Studio, HSS, all hog and all black. Brazzy board, one piece trem, nice birds, and looks to be in good condition. My first 80's PRS.

I will clean it up and take some pics tomorrow for a proper NGD but had to vent about the packing job. Please let me know if I am over reacting and I will edit this post but I was shocked when the guy pulled it out of the back with only three pieces of tape and a FedEx tag on the handle.

Not overreacting at all...that is epic packing fail.

A similar thing happened to me awhile back, when a 1992 Custom 24 arrived to my door with the trem arm also floating about inside the (non-original) case. At least that one was in a box though...

However, there were a bunch of little dings on the top of the guitar...hard to tell from the pre-sale photos if they were "there the whole time" as the store manager insisted over the phone. I was so pissed that someone's stupidity and carelessness likely damaged a fine and difficult-to-replicate instrument.

I ended up returning that guitar...the packaging fiasco started things off badly, and when the guitar just didn't sound like I had expected at all, and found that the pots had been replaced (couldn't even determine mfr or year from the codes) I decided it wasn't for me.

Best of luck with the studio, love those. Local shop by me had a dark red one a few years back, played it a few times, wasn't in the best shape, but sounded really great.

That sucks for sure, but you absolutely stole that guitar!

Oh, and double congrats and... DIBS!

So here are the pics....other than normal dings and dents this is in good shape. From 3 feet looks killer. For what I paid I feel like I stole it....

The wiring is rough and will need to be cleaned up.

Yak fur in case

Definitely a ridiculous packing job. I don't get it - I'm surprised the shipper even accepted it like that.
What a great looking guitar though! Congrats!
I always think the better the deal the less likely I am to complain, if its a deal that makes me feel like I stole something - and it makes it to me ok- then I'm happy enough to not complain much to the seller no matter the packing job/hair. But that doesn't make it not a bad packing job  Is the case ok?

Is the case ok?

Fedex guy said that a hardshell case is acceptable to them if someone wants to ship that way!

Case is decent once I clean it up. Overall I am thrilled but was just getting over the shock of seeing my new/old guitar shipped that way.

On a separate note....anyone have a wiring diagram for the old Studios? I see a sweet switch diagram and an old wafer 5 way diagram but neither supports a HSS configuration. Also what does a sweet switch do for the 5 positions on the rotor switch?

Hey, I recognize that yak fur. I think that's the case I used to keep my yak in! I wonder how that guy got it?

Great guitar by the way!
