Is this a "real" 10 top?

I am thinking about buying this PRS. The seller claims its a '1994 Custom 22 10 top' but the picture of the back of the headstock has me worried. Anyone think this is odd?

The 10 is unusual relative to my experience. It looks typeset rather than hand written.

The "10" on my '91 CU24 is not hand written but stamped. You have to hold it at the correct angle and in the right light to see it. That looks normal to me for that era.

As a heads up, PRS may or may not have more information on this guitar based upon serial number and pics. They didn't keep great records back then and '94 is pre-MODCAT. You will find more information in the pickup cavities though.

What the heck does MODCAT mean?

The MODCAT is a bar code found under one of the pickups. You can enter the code into an online decoder and it will spit out the build specs of the guitar. But this wasn't implemented until the early 2000's (not sure of the year).

On a '94, in the pickup cavities you will find the serial number, signatures/markings of everyone that had their hands on it, color, and whatever else someone wanted to add along the way.

What the heck does MODCAT mean?

It's an alpha numeric code found in the pickup cavity of PRS guitars, and on a sticker outside of the case. You plug it into the Modcat decoder and it tells you everything about the guitar. Wood types, pickups, color etc.

I had a 1993 Custom 24 with a 10-top and the 10 was stamped into the back of the headstock. This one looks legit to me.

As others said it is normal for that era.
I believe 1994 was the first year of the Custom 22.

She looks good, but she's got trouble. I am getting a pretty bad hum when I am not touching anything metal on the guitar
