This awesome '89 Special just got to me in a trade deal. I don't know much about these instruments, only what I've read on the PRS site and I wanted to ask if there was a HH version of this model or could this be some kind of custom order? (The PRS site says Specials had HSH pickup configurations, mine has a serial # of 9 7516.) However, the tone is incredible, especially for its light weight, it's an awesome guitar indeed.

That's not a special. Its a standard.

Markie, don't even know where to begin on that collection. Simply outstanding! Early standards in opaque finishes are my favorite PRS. It's good to know that there are still a lot of great ones out there. :)

JD, love the pearl white. This may be a longshot, but was that the one Gruhn Guitars had for sale early last year? (If so, I had the pleasure of playing it. What a great one, I would have given a kidney for that thing!)

Here is mine 1985....

It is signed "Special" inside the trem cavity under the clear coat so it's definitely a Special :)

Anyone have a larger scan of this ad? I have the twin of the guitar in the photo (mine's an 89).

Does it say anything in the treble pickup cavity? A word under the trem doesnt neccesarily mean thats the model.

Here's my 1985 Vintage Yellow Custom:

Here's a 1985 "PRS Guitar" also known as a Pre-Standard. The color is Black Pearl or Pearl Black. I've heard both, and don't know which is correct.
