New Member -- My PRS Story (begins)

How's this for a story? Wednesday, I played my first PRS ever. Today, I bought my first PRS ever!

I am a long-time musician; old school Tele kind of guy as far as electrics go and predominantly an acoustic guy at heart. I had never seriously considered a PRS because the price tags always scared me away and they were always behind the counter, in the "no touch" zone (too much trouble, just grab a Fender).

So, I go into the store 2 days ago looking for an electric that is "different" (I currenly have a Tele and an old '76 Les Paul that appears to be on permanent "loan" to one of my sons ... ). So after playing several electrics and not hearing or feeling anything I particularly liked, one of the guys grabbed a Custom 22 and said, "Here try this". I have to say it blew away any guitar I had played up to that point. I was beginning to think the amp I was using was a poor choice until I plugged in the PRS. I got lost in playing for several minutes. Clean, articulate, sweet tones, and the versatility. I didn't want to try anything else out after that. My brain was too busy churning on how I might possibly be able to afford this instrument. Well to shorten the story, I traded in a Strat that I wasn't playing much which helped make the transaction possible. I'll still be paying off the credit card for several months, but in the meantime, I'll be enjoying my new PRS.

Being new, I hope to benefit from this community from those who are down the trail a ways. Thanks.

It's an old stock Custom 22 that had been in the shop for a while (if I'm reading the SN right, made in 2006; the shop had dropped the price twice; they got me on the 2nd drop ) ... it's an Amber 10 Top, 5-way rotary switch ... I hope to get a pic posted tomorrow ...

I believe you'll love her and it won't take long either. Any PRS I've ever played was tone for days and any one I've ever worked on was a pure joy. Total ease of adjustments due to thoughtful design and construction. The first thing you can tell is that guitarists design and craft them. First time I played on moons years ago, that's just what I said. Feels like a guitarist made this.

Just speaking as a musician who has gone through literally 200+ instruments, only to keep a few, I say that for quality and versatility of tone, comfort and playability, a PRS is as fine an instrument as there is, even the boutique guitars. For quality of materials and over the top craftmanship, they're superior to most guitars available, even the boutique guitars. Considering beauty of lines and design and those freakin' crazy woods, what I call the eyegasm properties, they're second to none. Like most of you cats here, my hands, ears and eyes are my life, and until I play a guitar that exceeds those qualities, the only three things I know I can rely on tell me a PRS is as good as it gets. I get much joy out of mine and even more from seeing the beautiful guitars that others own.

You're gonna love her. Same as we do. New folders in My Documents with guitar porn...check some of the pics of guitars of forum members. Jaw dropping. Won't be long and you'll have your next PRS picked out.

Yes, I'm afraid you are right. Now that I've gotten a taste of how good they play and sound, I am already thinking about some of the awesome colors I've seen ... I guess it never ends ...

Yes, these are like potato chips, and cats - you can't stop at one. I am a shining example - only 9 months ago I got back into playing after having sold off everything years ago, and if you check my signature, I think I need an intervention!

As a new owner, I must say that I don't think for the most part the average guitarist really understands what the PRS brings to the table ... I certainly was ignorant until someone literally put one in my hands and said "have a go at this". What was totally unexpected to me was the beauty of the clean tones coming out of the PRS. I like it simple and the more beauty that's coming from the guitar itself and the less I have to effect the tone, the better. Now, certainly I am pleased at how it sounds with a little OD or Dist, Delay etc. but the real beauty to me is when it's just "guitar to amp". As I said, the quality of clean tones was something I had no idea about with the PRS. But now I know ... and I guess there's no turning back ...
