Jam And Record!

This was a tough weekend. I got my recording desk all cleaned up and everything hooked back up. I started to fire things up and of course the OS had a big update so I had to wait that out. Then I was having issues with both the mouse and keyboard. I discovered that the batteries had blown up inside of both of these things. I got them out and used contact cleaner in them and cleaned them up the best I could. I really hate when this happens. it happened to the mouse one other time. I didn't think I was going to be able to revive it either time. There was a ton of junk in it. I got both back up and working. About the time I started getting somewhere the mouse up an died. I ordered a new one. This one has a rechargeable battery in it. Those tend to hold up better. It showed up the next day. In Apple fashion, they sent a cable to charge it with that I don't own one thing that it will work with. I had to order a new cable. That showed up today. I found a USB mouse of mine and plugged that in so I could at least get into some things.

I pulled up a song that I worked on earlier this year. I had it farther along than I remembered. I tried everything I could think of playing wise and I had zero creativity in me after the mess I went through getting everything up and running. I didn't even have the will to want to touch it today. I guess I will see how this week and weekend goes. At least everything is ready to roll.. Now I just have to get me ready to roll.
I can not count the number of times I was really flowing with creativity and some ugly issue rears it's head! And I'm not talkin' just tech issues, some things just out of left field having nothing to do with what I was about to get done ;~((

Anyway, sounds like you have it sorted out! Love that cable game Apple plays! So forward thinking to ensure you keep buy those proprietary terminated wire strands ;~))

They've done this at TDPRI in the Twanger threads for quite some time now. Mostly amateur level.
I don't get paid enough to play to consider myself anything more than an amateur. However, my insurance company considers me to be a professional since I have made any money playing.

Didn't PRS do something like this in the Play at Home Challenge?
Did they? That would be interesting to look up.

I'm saying a lot at TDPRI is pretty poor and some embarrassing.
This will be encouraging ALL players to participate. There will be NO shaming, or you will answer to me! Will not be tolerated. All skill levels welcome, and you can play whatever you want. If you can't solo on guitar but play a mean harmonica, go ahead. Want to sing? or play another bass line over it? Some keys? FINE! Again, our goal is to maximize participation. To get the community involved! If we put up 'Blues in A" one week and that is your jam, JAM. If we put up chugga chugga metal mugga the next and homey don't play that, don't do one that week. Or better, push yourself to try something new and do it. But participate as often as you can.

We're encouraging ALL levels of recording skill to participate as well. If you don't have, or don't even know how to use a DAW, that is fine! Play the track on your monitors, play along on your guitar (or whatever) and record audio or video with your phone. IF the next guy wants a multitracked masterpiece, that's fine as well. But we're not asking for recording experts only to participate. DO WHAT YOU CAN!

This is for FUN and to establish some more camaraderie and musical connection with the group. If someone ASKS for help with a DAW or with a solo, or asks for critique, then constructive criticism or instruction can be provided. We want to make it fun, and those who want to learn and grow can.

There are all kinds of skill levels in multiple areas here. Help where you can. I for example haven't recorded in a proper DAW for several years now, so I'm sure I'm totally behind the curve now AND need to set up a newer computer to do so. Pending that up and running I might even have to do the first couple with a phone or simple recording setup.

I think (still discussing) we'll have a new thread for each jam, and you can comment, put your track in that thread etc. and the next track will be a new thread. You can comment, help, etc. in each thread at any time, so don't worry if you get a little behind. Things are still in the works, but it looks like we'll probably start with existing backing tracks, and then have some members who will create BT's for us when possible moving forward.

We're looking for input from the group as well. This thing doesn't need to be static and can change as it grows. We have as of now, a group of myself and two other volunteers who are working together to get this up and running.

More to follow...

As a casual observer and hopeful participant...if you're ripping audio off your phone, because that's the best technology you know, I think participation will be low. But's thats my $.02. What I was referring to was specifically very poor audio like that, major timing errors and tracks not in tune with themselves....so adding instruments not tuned to a standard pitch (A=440?) can make it rough.. You're not going to easily "tune" your harmonica track, nor find it appealing to listen to, if the backing tracks is needing major fixing, to even start a foundation.

Yeah..I understand friendly...no shaming like just saying..."you suck"... but it is 2024. Computer recording has been around for 30 years and making MP3 files isn't rocket science. Neither is gathering royalty free tracks off the internet, versus some cassette demo done in 1970, layered in hiss and
tape speed variations.

But I'm all in and glad to help. I've been an active participant at the other site, typically adding on to tracks, twice a week. It IS nice receiving comments, especially of initial reactions and actual suggestions for improvement. But keeping things friendlly....it admittedly is more "back patting" than offering suggestions.

in the forum we did this in previously, we had one guy who actually got pretty good at recording the track playing through his monitors, and his guitar through his amp, and recording it with his phone. Basically, it was all he wanted to do. No interest in a DAW, but he was a good player (gigged regularly, but wasn't into creating a home studio) and participated regularly. Once we got his phone position down, his "mixes" were more than acceptable for this purpose.

That said, I think we'll be starting off with standard backing tracks. No cassette or hiss. The point is, we don't want "well set up and versed in DAW recording" to be a prerequisite for participation. Yes, I'm sure there will be some entries that have good playing but bad sound. Again, an opportunity to learn.

Heck in the other forum, we even had one guy who would record his take to MP3 then send it to another forum member to "mix" over the BT, render and send it back to him, then he'd post it. He was using a little Zoom recorder to record his tracks while listing to the BT with headphones. It worked out fine.

so no aweful BTs, but no requirement to have a well set up home studio in order to participate.

We will definitely have things in tune and cleaned up. I do all of my work in a DAW. I use a few different ones. I am a stickler for tuning so you can rest assured that I won't put something out that isn't in tune. I have a strobe tuner on my desk that I tune everything with before any recording.

I was in the last time , there was one track a month I had fun it was like 5 years ago here was one I dug up !
I would love to try again.

Great playing and thanks for sharing thatI In addition to a cool listen, it helped me find the threads below.

Here are the threads I was able to find related to that previous jam initiative (which was started by a member named @jjpish68 who was Last seen Dec 4, 2020 - last monthly entries I could find in my searches were for the May 2019 jam - the below are more or less in chronological order):

Looking forward to participating and helping out with this idea. The previous ones were called PRS Monthly Jam, but I don't think we should use the name PRS in the titles. Open to ideas on what to call them, but "The Forum Follies" (follies - noun, plural fol·lies - the state or quality of being foolish; lack of understanding or sense. a foolish action, practice, idea, etc.; absurdity: the folly of performing without a rehearsal. )!!!
