Has anyone ever seen or know for sure a PRS SE Bernie Marsden in Black?

The latter set is what I put on yesterday, Ernie Ball Slinky 9-42.
Feel and sound pretty good so far but was wondering if 10's might be better.

But all I had was 6 packs of 9-42 and one pack of 11-54 at home...lol.
I prefer the sound of 10's over 9's but I've watched shootouts on YouTube comparing progressively lighter and lighter strings (Billy Gibbons uses 7's!)and they all sounded fine.

And then you have Stevie Ray Vaughn who reportedly used 13's on Texas Flood!!

Holy Moly.
Easier to make chords on a bass...lol.

I go back and forth between 9's and 10's.

Most of my electric guitars are strung with 10's.

But not all.

Sometimes I want to bend those strings a little more easily.

I'm really enjoying my Bernie even though play time has been limited due to work...and more work.
The EMG active pups I verily like in it.

That one's anything but stock unfortunately. Altho the Duncan 59 pickups are an improvement.

The bridge is very different from stock.

Coil tap switch added and one volume control removed it looks like.

Master volume and tone now instead of vol, vol, tone.

I'm sure it's a sweet guitar. But for that price I'd rather start with stock and then change the parts to what I like.

You guys got me thinking about a black Bernie tho!

Wolfetone just extended his pickup sale. His Alnico 2 Marshallheads sure sound good in a Bernie.

As do PRS 57/08’s!

Well....hope nobody gets mad at me.

I just bought it for $500.

Told the owner he could keep the pickups and the tailpiece.

I'll restore the knobs and pots to volume/volume/tone and use a push/pull tone for coil splitting using a different resistor for each pickup.

I have a MannMade tailpiece w/adjustable brass saddles waiting to be put on it.

And I have a set of double cream humbuckers that are going to look killer in that guitar.

Now i'm done buying guitars.

Who knows what this had in it originally as it has those active EMG 80's in there and no other pups came with guitar so mia.

I'm going to say now they sound like great metal pups and hard rock but I'm not sure they know "mellow"
Probably Korean made 245 pickups. Nothing special. I replace them immediately.

Bernie makes them sound good in his demos of the SE Bernie guitar but he could play his butt off and make anything sound good.

So now you have a black Bernie as well.
Well played sir, well played!

I'm really thinking the EMG active pups don't suit the Bernie at all.
Well too hard edged for my taste, very visceral but that soon tires.

Suggestions for replacements that won't break the bank?

I like EMG's in my bass.

Not in my guitars.

For this guitar I modified a set of Duncans. JB for the bridge with a roughcast A5 magnet and a 59B used as a neck pickup with a roughcast A4 magnet. Sounds like a Dragon 1 neck now.

Sounds really, really, REALLY GOOD! As good as pretty much any boutique set.

Here's how it looks now:

Whatever I change to is something I need to buy because unlike a lot of people here I don't have a stash of pups hidden away.
Usually buy stock guitars and keep em stock.
This was obviously not stock when I bought it so will be first in a long time needing a pup swap.
And tbh spending $350 or so on a set of pups does not make a lot of sense at this level.
So the more suggestions the better to try and get it "right" my first time.

At this level?

Fix 'em up and Bernies are as nice a guitar as you can find.

Don't let the prices Bernies sell for fool you.

Practice makes perfect but ultimately, I find guitar mods easier to do than change a flat tire.

The Duncans I put in this guitar can be found used for $150 a set. $200 brand new. Not $350.

You can do the mods yourself if you have a meticulous nature and can do careful work.

Magnets were about $4 each from AddictionFX.

But you need tools, experience and soldering skills. If you lack the experience watch some YouTube videos.

Watch 'em all, good and bad.

Then go for it.

Maybe start with a POS guitar first to learn on.

eBay does indeed have sets of JB and 59b for $170 shipped so that's fair enough.
Plenty of tools and soldering experience from fixing old valve radios and building my own speakers.
Be an interesting project at least.

That's probably the way I will go on pups then.
Thanks @Lewguitar
