There used to be a radio talk show host here who had a friend who had polio as a child - right before the vaccine came out. They gave the vaccine at this guy's school and he had to get it. He said he walked up to the nurse on his crutches and said, "Really?" She said yes, gave him the vaccine, and he said he threw his crutches in the air and screamed, "I'm cured!"

Then promptly fell on his face.

I suspect the words "iron lung" do not inspire the fear in today's children that they did in us.

"exotic" depends on where you were born. My mother's family had never used garlic and I can distinctly remember when she used a clove in her cooking for the first time. I was walking home from kindergarten and could smell something weird a block away
