Academic Question regarding the 305

1st I want to say that this is just a perception and I am curious what others think. Why did the 305 not catch on?
Is it the same reason the Brent Mason became discontinued?

Completely guessing here, but if you like to tinker and try different pups you are pretty much out of luck, unlike most all the humbucker equipped PRS.
No idea other than that.
