Hello all.
My first post here although I did post on Birds and Moons.
Sorry this first post is on a semi-negative note.
A few weeks ago I bought a second hand 25th Anniversary 305 from a reputable dealer which arrived in A1 condition. Two weeks in the lacquer has started to flake off the edges of the rosewood board in two places and on close inspection I can see smaller bubbles forming all along the bass side fingerboard edge.
Why? No obvious reason and nothing to be gained from a post mortem. Shipping it back to the PTC isn't really feasible (it would have to be France - UK - Maryland and back).
A local luthier has agreed to have a look and see what can be done and offers both straight poly and nitro finishing. The 305 dates from May 2010 which I understand was the transition year from acrylic poly to the V12 finish.
Is there any way of finding out what exactly it was finished with to give the guy an idea of what he's dealing with?
In practical refinishing terms, does it matter?
Very grateful for any advice.
