I try to stay away from fundamentalists personally. I think it was all the reggae bands I was in.

Honestly, why would you pull the neck? That seems like adding more work that's unnecessary.
If you want to preserve the body, cover it well before you work on the guitar.
I have nothing negative to say about you restoring that guitar. In fact, i encourage work like this. I also encourage anyone who wants to learn more about working on instruments.
So, even sans-teeth, I say go for it!
