That's a very interesting chart. I have a guitar neck made from all of those woods except myrtle. I believe there are so many components that contribute to the tone of a guitar that it is very difficult to single out one thing that makes it not work for an individual (and we are all certainly different as to what we like). I had a ziracote necked guitar that I just couldn't bond with; it just didn't seem to have that tone
acoustically (ie. unplugged). Then I have others with ziracote that sound great. I have played a number of cocobolo necked guitars and thought they sounded good, and then I got this, and it's simply a tone monster (in the good sense
):
One interesting thing about that chart is that the very dense tropical hardwoods are grouped together as tone woods. That doesn't really surprise me. I would have to assume that it would hold true for necks as well. I certainly think that case is made when seeing where maple is presented in the pie chart for its tone.
While this may sound like a cop-out regarding your question, I wouldn't have a problem choosing any of those woods if all the other components work with it. That said, I haven't played a BRW neck that disappointed me.
Also, I'm typing this late at night, have the flu, and am medicated. I may wake up tomorrow, read this and say to myself.............WTF?
