I am surprised PRS does not have their own p-90 series pickups. I would be first in line for a neck humbcker sized one. Is these a reason we don't see them?

Check out the Single for Humbucker from Lollar. I know you're looking for them from PRS, but check them out anyway

Yeah, it would have to be better than all the great options out there to be worth doing. They don't even make their own P90-sized P90, so have no context for it either!

They are really pushing the envelope lately with their humbuckers... Might be tricky to start from scratch with this kind of thing.

Just my take obviously, but Paul's not unhappy if you go aftermarket to satisfy yourself!

I'd rather see them bring back the Narrowfield pickups.

I know they're humbucking, but the 408s are very p90 inspired. Check out the archival double-p90 bridge guitars and then realize the wider field of the bridge 408. Not a coincidence.

That said, a legit PRS p90 would be more novel than innovative. The P90 options abound and are fantastic. But then anything's possible...

Considering what they've been able to do with the 5X/XX series and 408's, I certainly would like to see them do P90's, because I'm sure they would be cool. Unfortunately, I don't think the market demand is there. Which is a shame, P90's are righteous pickups.

What about the soapbar? I know P90 is more than just configuration, but isn't that "their take" on it?

Totally agreed. It is interesting to note that all McCarty models sport PRS pickups EXCEPT for those with P90s, and then those go for Seymour Duncans--who makes too many uber-righteous pickups to count. Why PRSh has never recreated his own riff on the P90 proper is a mystery. I point out McCarty because he stands as PRSh's primordial inspiration for classic guitar design, philosophy and construction, and especially for his own pickup designs and wire selections--as you all already know. Maybe one IS in the works, but I doubt it. Single Coil pickups are not a Paul Reed Smith staple. There's probably a reason for that. Maybe he just doesn't like hum? Hmmmmmm......

As ViperDoc mentions, almost all P90s/soapbars PRS uses are supplied by Seymour Duncan.

I've seen other makes specced on Private Stocks though.

I'd say yes or at least work with a specialised supplier.

I now have 2 guitars with humbucker sized P90s: an old PRS SE soapbar project quitar modified to take 2 Mississippi Queens and a Steinberger with Stockholm Neck and MQ bridge - all from Bareknuckle pickups. Its simple enough to drop one in and try it out, I like that they have a wide range of HB sized P90s to chose from; the higher in the range the more output, more bass.

They are screened quite well, nowhere near as noisey as a stock mexican strat through my amps, that drove me to get noiseless pickups for my strat

I'm a fan of P-90s, and have had several P-90 PRS guitars (and others) and of course, my old and trusty '65 SG Special has the originals from that era that so many pickup makers try to copy (incidentally, I like the Duncans more than the originals for some reason).

But I'll say this: the 85/15s and 58/15s combine the best qualities of the P-90s I've played with the nicest qualities of humbuckers. They're clear, open, and quiet. While I will agree that PRS didn't want the raunch of a P-90, they're superb pickups and well worth considering.

For what it's worth, I don't think the humbucker sized P-90s truly sound like a P-90, but of course I haven't played them all.

Big P90 fan here...have quite a few different git's equipped with them, and they all sound different. Recently acquired my first Reverend that has the Railhammer P90's in it (bucker-sized...) and they are incredible!
There's always room for more P90's in my world!

I ha e never played a P90 equipped guitar before.
Gimme an example of a good rock tune that was recorded with them so I can hear them.
I know I have heard them before, but unless I hear a song that has them, I would think they were just buckers.

Not sure you'll hear much difference on a record, since so many factors come into play; you really just have to play some to understand how they affect your playing, but there are quite a few famous ones; "Mississippi Queen," by Leslie West is often referred to as typical of the P-90 sound with an overdriven amp. "Live at Leeds" by The Who featured a P-90 SG Special; Santana at Woodstock in '69; Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya Yas Out, I think Keef played an SG Special.

Here's a video with Greg Koch, my apologies for the Gibson:

And last but not least...me! I played a P-90 guitar on a TON of ads in the 90s and 2000s. But I can't remember which ones. So there's that. ;)

I definitely agree with this. Narrowfields are da bomb. I'm not sure about 85/15s / 58/15s being P90-ish. Fantastic to be sure, but they don't remind me of P90s. Narrowfields do though....just without the hum.

Thanks Les, I would have never guessed West used P90s on that song.
Oh, I forgot, I did play a P90 guitar in the summer at work.

The 85/15s and 58/15s remind me of P-90s in terms of their openness and clarity. I did say that they combine certain qualities of P-90s and humbuckers, not that they sounded alike.

I think the Narrowfields are great, but on the other hand, I think P-90s have significantly more "cut". Really cool pickups nonetheless, though.
