High E string sounds like a sitar

Thanks. It is because it doesn't sound like a sitar when fretted that I think it may be the nut but, as a neophyte, I will wait and see what someone more experienced thinks!

Yup. That eliminates the nut. Unless the nut slot is too low and it is contacting the first fret when played.

Sitar sounds on fretted strings are very often due to a worn groove or burr in the saddle. Happens on Telecasters all the time. It happens on guitars that get played a lot, in my experiences.
