Read about this yesternight while in bed from the June issue of Premier Guitar.

Good article with tips to not overdue it with the Naphtha.

I'd use Scotch-Brite™ every time, it doesn't leave any residue behind.
Warning: Naphtha is flammable—think lighter fluid—so never use it around fire or flame
Ha, this made me chuckle, at least half of the health warning is missing.

Can affect: lungs, skin, eyes, nose, throat, nervous system, kidneys and prolonged exposure can also cause fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

Don't forget the safety gloves and breathing equipment.

As always with this stuff, the main thing is, as the medical profession says, "Do no harm."

I've seen lots of guys get carried away with this stuff and ruin their very nice (and valuable!) guitars.

I also read that some use green, and some use gray Scotchbrite.
I guess you would want the closest thing to 0000 steel wool.

I remember back around 1973 using 0000 steel wool on the fretboard of my '73 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe.
Never taped anything, for all I know I may have got steel into the mini humbuckers.
But at 16 years old I did not know any better.

Yeah, I do not think Les I would want to do to any of my guitars what they outline above.
Plus I always wash and dry thoroughly my hands each time before I pick up a guitar.
Never had a sticky neck.
