Check out this antique dresser I picked up yesterday in Montrose, Colorado.

Might be 200 years old. Built in a Federal style. I'm a former furniture maker and designer.

I've always loved fiddle back and birdseye maple. When I was a little boy my grandmother had a little step stool made of solid birdseye. When she passed it was given to me. That kind of wood caught my eye at a very early age.

And then I noticed my first 59 Les Paul!

while this looks like Koa , it's curly Spalted Maple ..

for the more adventurous .. more spalt .. I always like finding sets with unusual images in the figure .

I go through at least 1000 sets browsing for every one I buy, they have to be REALLY special

yes they are Spalted , which like Buckeye in this one it is actually a decay in the wood, it makes for some spectular patterns . .

Beautiful! And caused by fungus and rot.

So when the wood is kiln dried does that kill the fungus and rot too? So the wood is stable and not going to deteriorate?

once dry and seals the rot stops, spalt isn't fragile like buckeye .. one of the reasons it's SO expensive ..Alembic charges $2000 for a buckeye top

I'm guessing it's been refinished? It looks really well done if it has.

When I see fancy woodgrain on furniture, I automatically think "What a shame, that would make a beautiful guitar."
