Do guitars without pickguards get scratched up?

All of my guitars (Fenders and Gibsons) have scratches on the pickguards. When I see a PRS or a Gibson signature Slash Les Paul with no pickguard, I think how scratched up it would get in my hands. Do PRS players just pick in a way that their pick doesn't touch the guitar? Or is the finish strong enough to resist scratches? Or do the guitars get scratched up, and people just don't care? What's the deal? Serious question from a guy soon to own a PRS if things go as planned.
