Had the guy had flame maple plates for the MEV instead of swamp ash, I think they would have turned out insanely good!!!
I use TranTint dyes and denatured alchohol , mix them in a jar and hold them up to the light until I get the shade just right .

The real fun as you've found is using varying shades . I've used 20 on this one instrument .. the results .. when you shift the guitar under the lights it changes colors .. it's all about subtlety and patience

On a happy progress note, I've gotten a few coats of clear on. I ended up going with a more glossy clear and sorta like it okay so far. Opinions welcome, whether positive or constructive criticism. I've got thick skin and welcome all opinions!

This was a test piece for a guitar build, where I stained a burst on a whole guitar top. I used water based leather dyes. Still nerve wracking though -
