2024 Santana Retro - Now is 24.594" Scale Length...

Well, that went downhill fast! ;)

I was Mr. 245 back in the day, I guess. (I had owned quantity 34 total PRS 245's over the years, I think I counted up on the other thread recently...) When the 594 came out, and I loved that and got used to it, and that obsoleted the 245 scale for my brain and fingers. I actually found switching back and forth between the 245 scale and the 594 scale more difficult than switching between the 245 or 594 scale and the 25 inch scale. The difference between the 245 scale and the 594 scale was very subtle, but still very much there for me, it threw me off. Believe it or not, switching back and forth between the 594 scale and the 25 inch scale was different and easier (at least for me) - I could accept that that were two different things and work to build familiarity and muscle memory for both.

Back in the 245 days, I certainly seemed to always have one favorite at a time between the 245 scale and the 25 inch scale, and went through phases on what I was preferring at any given time. (Part of it was that there were just more options and more new things coming out in the 25 inch scale, I think.) When I was playing out in the band, I could switch pretty easily between the two for gigs - as long as I did the rehearsal before the gig with the same guitar. I would estimate that over the 6 year period in the band, it was probably about 50/50 between 245 and 25 inch scaled guitars. Maybe 60/40 in favor of the 245’s. (The 594 came after the band thing ended for me.)

Once I started down the 594 path, I decided to sell all the 245 scaled guitars - which was a bit painful, as I had built some pretty amazing Private Stock 245’s. But I wasn’t playing the 245’s, once I became smitten with the 594's.

This time around for me I seem to be enjoying both the 22 Fret and 24 Fret 25 inch scale guitars, for playing certain things it is nice to have the easier ergonomics in the upper frets the Custom 24 gives you.

As I delve into the 594 scale guitars again as well (incoming!) the notion of a 594 scale Santana intrigues me - I think of it like the relationship between a 25 inch McCarty and a Custom 24, but in the 594 scale. A 22 fretter with a fixed bridge (DC 594) and a 24 fretter with a Trem (2024 Santana Retro), both with the same scale length. :)

Mine is just a plain old 24.5" scale :(
