Hey Chicagoans! Restaurant suggestions?

You guys are making me hungry !!! :)
Gawd, yes! I'm hungry! Can't wait to get there.

Thank you every body for the suggestions. I tried to "Like" every post but if I missed anyone know that I appreciate every single one.

My wife and I have started to digest (sorry. Couldn't help myself) every suggestion and figure which ones we definitely want to try and how to plan them with our routing. Pizza Friday night, nice dinner Saturday night, which for lunch, close to United Center, for lunch day of concert, etc. And, yes @bodia the hotel is close, practically walking distance for a healthy person, not me, to the United Center.

Even though I lived in Chicagoland, it was only for two years, and decades ago. I'm learning a lot. If nothing else, I hope to learn what the "viagra triangle" is:rolleyes:

Thanks again, everyone.

Both yummy....I mean really, you have to push it pretty far to get "bad" pizza. But, not close to the same thing.

Chicago Tavern Style.....really thin

Detroit Style

Except that's NOT really Detroit style pizza. That's bullsh!t Detroit pizza, basically a copy of Buddy's Pizza, which does not own the franchise rights or title to Detroit Pizza. In fact, they're the only ones in Detroit who even make pizza like that!

Most Detroit pizza is thin crust!!!

Sorry to disabuse you of that notion, but it's NOT Detroit pizza.

Hey, isn't "California Pizza Kitchen" just High End Little Caesars ??? (another Deetroit Pizza ... which I do not claim ;) ) ..
Little Caesars is horrible pizza. Not good Detroit pizza. You want good Detroit pizza?

This is the best of the best in Detroit, coal-fired pizza, and it's not even original. It's a copy of a famous New Haven, Connecticut Pizza:

But it absolutely smokes anything I've tried in Chicago by miles and miles.

Just like Chicago, most pizza here isn't Chicago Style . There's more than Buddy's Detroit Style, Papa Romanos, Jets, Little Ceasars, and whoever else. Although, besides Buddy's, Papa Romanos is the only one I'd eat. I think most of us probably eat thin or hand tossed on the regular..

I'd have to agree with about any Coal or Wood fire pizza place being killer. One of my favorites in Chicago is Coalfire, a joint right next to Music Box in Southport.

wood oven is a whole lot of drudgery (this according to my pizza chef), but for sure the result is best. i’m ‘this close’ to tearing out my brick oven, but if it could be adapted to coal-fired i might keep it.

If you're into BBQ there's the best in all of Chicagoland not far from United in Fulton Market. Green Street Smoked Meats. It seriously rivals some pits from when I lived in Texas. If you are into coffee, Sawada is connected to it. They have a jones worthy Military Latte.

For a burger there's Au Cheval right there too. Really tons of food and trendy spots in the blocks of Fulton Market.

Enjoy your trip and the show!

I get it. It’s just like deep dish isnt really chicago pizza

Skip Portillos, they are Portillos in name only, the food quality and portion are reduced, already lofty prices relatively speaking are higher. There is nothing there you couldn't get anywhere else that's cheaper and better other than the chocolate cake IMHO.

If you have the time and want the best italian beef or combo and italian ice, it's Johnnies in Elmwood Park, which is not that far west of the city.

Hot dogs? Gene & Jude's in River Grove. Best dogs in the country, just never, never ask for ketchup. No 'chicago' dogs there...mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, that's it. Fresh cut fries, tamales, and drinks. Stay away from peak hours, foodies taking selfies litter the parking lot.
Heinz ketchup and onions….always

so basically the whole of the midwest is disavowing and denouncing personal pan pizza? i have died.

plus also, maybe i would submit a ham/pineapple/jalapeño ahead of west coast cool jazz shrimp.
Neither is really personal pan pizza, they don't make them that small, at least here. It's more like 'Here's a future heart/diabetes problem for you and your entire family' pizza.

When I was a younger guy I jokingly once said, "I'm offing myself the slow way, with pizza and butter popcorn." Then it came true.

all pizzas are personal to me.

when i was younger i was ejected from all you can eat bbq chicken at jim and milt’s. they did give me a half bird for the road.

Native Detroiter here, too...Palmer Woods, Cass Tech, UM, Wayne State Law.

I agree about Columbus, it's a nice place! But I do love going to Chicago. My daughters know it better than I do, of course. But I like it a lot, except for the TRAFFIC!!

“Woooohooo, I’m a native Detroiter”

you forget sicily.

“You must respect the oven”

As usual discussion is more and restaurant suggestions are less...and fun, as usual!

If you're going to be downtown hit Pizzeria Due its a very authentic pizza with some history behind it

The other is (nobody mentioned this?) is The Billy Goat Tavern. Make sure you order a Coke :)

Yeah. Tell that to Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations, Eminem, the Four Tops, Alice Cooper, the MC5, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Ron Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Don Was, Bob Seger, Anita Baker, The White Stripes, Donald Byrd, Earl Klugh, The Knack, Juan Atkins, Sufjan Stevens, Johnny B, Greg Bissonette, Jackie Wilson, and a crapload of other musicians and performers the world copied.

Plus we're badass, so put on your skirt, get out your bagpipes, and STFU.

Uno's (across the street, at least back in the day and owned by the same people I'm told) opened a place in Michigan. Went under in a couple of years, people here didn't much care for it.

I once took a college road trip to Due because one of the Chicago guys I was friends with hyped it. Five of us piled into my '65 Mustang at night, we drove straight through, Due's was open late, and I thought it was very good.
