Don't wrap the string around the tuning peg. Pull tight, lock, tune. The more string around the tuning peg, the more likely that is to cause issues.
And, in your reply above to me, it does sound like something is sticking. Lube might fix it. I like to polish out those spots first, then use lube (TW.. dang it, just can't) and then it's fixed for good.
