I was listening to Styx today, and noted they used a lot of synth generated/assisted vocals in both the Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here albums. I don't think they did it as a mask for poor singing, but as an enhancement feature that was relevant to the songs. Although I could be wrong, I've read that Dennis was very particular about how things sounded, and could come off as a perfectionist. Which could lead one to believe he did it to cover James' or Tommy's strong vocal abilities.
