1. Music A short rhythmic phrase, especially one that is repeated in improvisation.

riff [rɪf] Music
n
(Music) (Music / Pop Music) (in jazz or rock music) a short series of chords
vb
(Music) (Music / Pop Music) (intr) to play or perform riffs in jazz or rock music
[probably altered and shortened from refrain]

Ahhh... The old Riff! Be it the classic intro to 'Smoke On The Water', The Fuzz tones of 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' or Slash's single note exercise that became 'Sweet Child 'O Mine'. Everybody loves a riff.

So... Which are yours?

Always loved the Les Paul and cocked wah sound on Money For Nothing:

Appetite For Destruction by Guns N Roses was choc full of great riffs:

Cool riff from Iron Maiden:

Here's a seriously cool riff from a very short lived UK band:

Lets see some of your favourites...

I know I don't come off as much of a "rocker" but in my past life I loved heavy riffs!

This is a Hare Krishna band called 108. The subject matter is intense if you can make it past the singing. Crazy heavy riff based on the Black Sabbath Flat Five.

One of the ultimate Slayer riffs ever. Still ingrained in the muscle memory of my fingertips since I was a High-schooler.

Love the riff on the Slayer tune!

I'm going a bit on the far end with this one- one of my favorite riffs is the opening of the Periphery tune called Zyglrox.

Riffs? Sooo many to love!

Some of these are a bit off the beaten path but OTOH they're not old and tired... Listen loud, kids!

I cannot comprehend how he plays this bass part and does the vocal (can't call it singing!) at the same time:

Simple but soo good with heavy interspersed with melodic:

Riff school (it's in open E tuning if you want to play along)!

Can't' leave out this one:

Soo heavy, precise, and wicked (and it grooves!):

I love Joe's 'cover' of just got paid.

And the first riff in this, so simple, but oh so brutal!

Seemed an unusually heavy version of Rosie. Am I going crazy? My head's stuck on the Rock Band ad version.

5. Gimme Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd
6. Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
7. Nighttrain - Guns N' Roses
8. The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy
9. Crazy On You - Heart
10. Jumpin' Jack Flash - Rolling Stones

Velvet revolver - Slither

Speaking of Stoke boys...

Ace Of Spades - Motorhead
