Why the drastic differences in McCarty Sunburst color?

Speaking of expensive figured woods, I nearly had a heart attack (I was searching for quilt tops, sorting from high to low price):

Case in point about the increased cost of wood.

I bought this “The Tree” set (including sides) 15 years ago at NAMM for $750. It rivals any of the sets above.



Then, I took it to Richard Hoover, Santa Cruz, who turned it into this:





And at the time, I almost didn’t buy the wood; it seemed too expensive. Todd Taggert of Luther’s Mercantile talked me into it.

The demon was no extra charge:

Here's my McCarty 594 in a burst color. I haven't seen another one like it in this color. I brought it online from Reverb. After getting it, it does look a little different than the picture that they posted. The lighting can really have an effect on the color.
