Okay so I decided my only Fender Strat needed some love
its a 2002 MIM Standard
So I ordered some Fender Pure Vintage 57/62 pickup in a pre-wired pickguard
They came in and I preceded to change them
Thinking it was a simple process
Remove the old
solder in the new
and get fabulous Rock Star tone

Wrong!

The exchange was slow but simple enough
extra ground wire that my MIM strat didn't have
Had to Google a solution
got that all solved
finally got the guitar back together
Noticed a messed up saddle on the trem
Had to fix that
just a lot of little stuff that added up
Took me several hours I'm sad to say
but the guitar is finally all back together
Fairly well set up
Time to play
and my Fabulous Rock Star Tone was HORRIBLE!
I had assumed pre-wired pickups would have the pickup height set
Wrong!
I have played with this thing for two days now
but finally today I found the right sweet spot
and got the tone I wanted

Was there one in addition to the ground going to the trem?

Too bad it took so long but good it worked out in the end. Hardware can be hard.
yes there were 2 ground wires
my research discovered the second wire was for a shielded cavity and would have gone to a screw through the shielding into the body
since my MIM was unshielded the second ground was unnecessary
I could have cut it off but I taped the screw eyelet off and left it in the cavity
