Does the push/pull tone require three lead/conductor pickups?

Yes, three (or 4 is okay too, if your pickup has that) are needed if you want to "split" your humbucker with the push/pull.

If you are using the two wire big black shielded wire with small white wire then you can split pickups.

That's what the stock McCarty pickups are unless you're talking about a 594.
