Just saw Boston (PRS sighting)...

Just saw Boston the other night and Gary Pihl played a PRS S2 Standard 24 (Black Satin, I think) the entire night other than acoustic numbers.

It sounded freaking fabulous. The pickups were clearly not original (I'd love to know whats in the bridge, the neck looks like a sustainer pickup). The Boston tone is all about those Rockmans though, but the PRS was a nice treat.

What is a Rockman?
Is that how they got the singing tone on their leads back then?
Their lead work always impressed me how it sounded, especially with dual guitars.

And really cool he was rockin' an S2.

Supposedly Def Leppard used to use the Rockman gear to record albums with. Hysteria was reputedly moslty Rockman tones.

I travelled with one and used it at home when the kids were on the snore.

I did as well. Quite ground breaking really. At least I think so. I had one when I first moved to Chicago In '87. I didn't want my roommate and his wife to hear my playing

That's just one Rockman product. There was a whole slew of half-size rack gear, all effects... that's the backbone of the sound, as well as his famous "Hyperdrive" pedal, of which he only ever made two...
