Duet guitars - have you noticed?

I've been fascinated with duet guitar solos lately. They're obviously not solos 'cos there's two of 'em but I don't know the correct term. I noticed something while watching tube stuff. These guys must play these duets a million times live and studio etc. so know them and their partners inside out but when they get together, particularly if they face each other, it really feels like it's the first time they've done it and are buzzin' off each other, like it's just a jam and there to be enjoyed. I would think after ten+ years on the road playing much of the same stuff, give or take, they would get fed up with it and each other but they seem to get better all the time. 'Hotel California' and 'Can't get enough' are two that come to mind.

I believe Boston used this technique for many of their solos too.
I like the sound.
