If you're a collector, the first Modern Eagle is probably the one. Brazilian necks (not on the later runs).

Playability? I'd probably go with a ME II, 57/08's and the dipped in glass gloss finish (ME I is satin) - or a ME Quatro. I believe the III came in stop tail only, no trems..

for me the original ME1 ( I currently have 5) 2 SC, 2 DCT and 1 DC HT, I also have an MEIII trem which pops in and out of favour but is a fine guitar too ;-)

Modern Eagle 1 is the most collectible and of course, sounds amazing. That said, I have played a ME2 with 57/08's and a Quattro with 53/10's and both of those sounded absolutely killer as well! Never played the ME3, but I can't see a ME with narrowfields sucking....
