Thanks dogrocket! Makes sense. Come to think of it, my archtop--an Ibanez Benson--also has a maple neck (as well as back and sides). But it is a very bright guitar, though that also has a lot to do with the pickups.

Thanks! I don't use much gain, but one of my least favourite things about Les Pauls is that the bottom end can be hard to tame when soloing on the neck pickup. I prefer a bit more focus in the lows, so if the 58/15s have more then that's great to know.

Thanks Dusty and vchizzle! I'm leaning towards the new McCarty because I liked the ones I played so much, but of course it would be significantly more expensive than an MC58. If only I could take Dusty's suggestion and buy both and keep the winner...
