Is it worth switching from 85/15s to 85/15?

I'm in the yes camp. In fact, just this morning I replaced the 85/15"S" set in my S2 Standard 24 with a set of USA HFS/Vintage Bass. Hadn't intended to when I got the guitar but I had them sitting around, tried them in an SE I had and they were just plain better. The split tones are way better!

2023 Current Opinion on HFS & Vintage Bass pickups?

FWIW my HFS/VB set is an older set that I bought off eBay several years ago. Also I'm playing them straight into a Tweaker 15 into a Red Fang speaker as well as an Orange Micro Dark into a 2x8 cabinet with Celestion PA type speakers. I like 'em.

2023 Current Opinion on HFS & Vintage Bass pickups?

Just a theory, but maybe the G&B pickups are over potted and the Maryland pickups were done just enough. Aside from other differences in materials etc.

Yes, so I could do a back and forth A/B comparison.

2023 Current Opinion on HFS & Vintage Bass pickups?

I swapped the Maryland HFS/VB into the Single Cut, complete with a push/pull and the resistors like the S2 has, and what a difference between them and the S2 85/15's! It's like a blanket has been pulled off the amp. So clear and clean and the split tones are just excellent. Of course the HFS...

2023 Current Opinion on HFS & Vintage Bass pickups?

Hmmm. Interesting older thread. It happens that I have a Maryland HFS/Vintage Bass set. First set of pickups I ever swapped. I'm dying to see how they compare to the 85/15 "S" set in my S2 Standard 24, which actually sound so good I'm not inclined to swap them. Maybe I'll put them in my SE...

Anyone move on from their SE SAS??

My SE Paul's and my SE SAS, both Indonesian were set up perfectly out of the box. Frets perfectly level, no fret sprout and the ends were as good or better than my S2, and my core McCarty.

Anyone move on from their SE SAS??

I've got no fret sprout on my SE SAS, in fact the neck could hardly be more perfect except for being the Wide/Thin. That didn't stop me from picking up an S2 Standard 24 Satin McCarty burst recently. Same 85/15s pickups but with Pattern Regular neck, one piece mahogany body and dots! Those last...

Pickguard static crackle on S2 Standard 24

I'd forgotten about the dryer sheet fix. I found one and it did work like magic, only thing is I found that with my strats and teles the effect didn't last long. The foil on the backside connected to ground did. Maybe I'll try it on the S2.

Pickguard static crackle on S2 Standard 24

Just noticing quite a lot of static noise coming from my fingers on the pickguard of my newly acquired S2. I've dealt with this in the past on strats and telecasters, but in those cases I had lined the cavities with copper foil as well as the back of the pickguard and made sure that a bit of the...

S2 gets Core Pickups and Electronics

I agree, especially regarding the bridge and the birds. I had one in a McCarty burst with a gloss finish. Sold it to a friend who just loves it. I bought an S2 Standard 24 in the same McCarty burst but with the satin nitro and have to say that I like the finish and the whole guitar much better...

    OUCH!

I hate it when that happens! Nice repair job.

S2 gets Core Pickups and Electronics

I've gotten to a place where I don't care for the veneer tops either. I'd rather just have the plain mahogany as on the S2 Standard 24 I just bought. With the satin McCarty burst it's just gorgeous to my eyes. I agree about PRS moving in the right direction as far as the upgraded electronics...

Why not put a pickguard on the S2 Customs as well?

I agree. I own a core McCarty, an SAS SE and an S2 Standard 24 and the S2 is the most comfortable and lightest of the three. As a 2017 it has the pattern regular neck which I'm finding I prefer over the Wide/Fat or the Wide/Thin as well.
