I have ran into that before as well. Sometimes it is as simple as two wires running parallel in the guitar cavity. Check the cavity and tug on the wires to make sure all of them are firm. Also check and make sure that the ground on the trem claw is firm. That sounds like it may be the issue...

Yep, I have used them. They are passable as long as you order the correct spacing. Plus, they are MUCH cheaper than replacing the pickups for a color change.

I will probably put them on eBay and Reverb tonight. Like Andy said, I am trying not to buy more guitars just so that I can put pickups in them (like buying a car to test some tires). I was a bid dubious about them when I picked up the guitar as I have never been a fan of vintage coils.
