FWIW, the Archon FX loop issue regarding radio frequency interference can be fixed with a grid-blocking resistor added to the grid of the FX loop return triode. It's a super-cheap, trivial fix (see pic). This resistor is actually missing from other PRS amps as well, though most likely more...
This will happen with almost any pickup to some extent, especially if you put a small speaker with a high-flux magnet against the coil... it's probably picking up more electromagnetic field than actual audio. :)
That being said, I do feel like the */15s aren't as heavily potted, and perhaps the...
Yes, great that you had a... happy ending... ;)
IME the */15s are more open sounding with more high end. Not much brighter per se, just more high end extension.
I love the 57/08s and 59/09s, but I can see how going from a setup tuned for the 57/08s or 59/09s would sound different. Personally I...
The only difference I can feel between my bound and un-bound 245s is that the frets taper off very slightly further away from the edge of the fretboard, since the binding "caps" the fret ends. If anything, the rolling on the edges is slightly more pronounced on the bound fretboard.
And do post...
Sorry, no ziricote experience (yet!) but between IRW and cocobolo, I feel like cocobolo has a more piano-like sustain -- not the warm bloom of the IRW -- but a more even wider-range sustain that doesn't seem as strong but lasts a long time. I would say cocobolo is "crisper", like a middling...
I think the answer here is pretty simple:
A) The guitars that sit on shelves longer will be the more expensive ones, and thus the more blingy ones. True for PRS or any other make of just about any other product. And GC is unutterably useless at promoting or selling from their "platinum" rooms...
11s here, sounds killer. My gauge changes on PRSi have always been trivial setup-wise IME, and my S2s are no exception. I had a Korina SE that was overpowered by 11s given the wood quality; same with my '95 strat with those poor thin C necks. ;)
Personally, I think the market for "the exact same guitar made 10, 20, 50 years go" is already overly represented by other builders. Why do people who want and love the old CEs care about a new version of what they already have? How does it devalue them or their character? o_O
One can actually...
I believe the 58/15s and 85/15s are now only lightly potted, and are definitely much more open in the high end. I suspect that's why the PRS rep wanted a demo of the volume (sans treble loss) and tone controls. You can get great, bright squealy gain tones, but rolling down the volume cleans it...
