School Me on Growth Rings

I never knew these were growth rings. I thought they were pyjama stripes.

Not going to opine on the state of the game, except to say that, with 3 decades of PRS guitars out there, it's hard to imagine the game ever being over. But this beautiful guitar is interesting to me, in the way that my original question of about quilt was. If I'm reading the top correctly, the growth rings are generally lighter than the dark parts of the flame and darker than the light parts. Curious.
 
One thing I like about growth rings is that they make it look more organic and "wood-y" to me, looks like proper timber.
 
I love wood that looks like wood - the vertical grain lines or whatever.

I also love wood that looks nothing like wood - flames, or ocean waves, or a nice soft quilt, yet I know that it comes purely from the way the wood grew and was stained.

This thread is making me want to drool all over my PRSi, gazing at their lines and curves...
