9s on a 594. Show of hands

Here’s an interesting episode of That Pedal Show, where different gauges of the same string brand/type are used on the guitars and compared back-to-back.

The differences are clearly audible. There’s more oomph with thicker strings. However, if a heavier gauge renders the guitar less playable for you, does that matter? I’d think the balance between tone and playability will vary from player to player.

One other thing is that the fundamental character of the guitar’s tone stays pretty much the same with the various gauges. It’s more a question of emphasis.
