I was fine with the PRS guitars I currently own. I had no plans to get a Tele, and I have some dual humbucker bolt on guitars that I'm very happy with.
But then I heard Rich Hannon and Paul playing the NF53 in the demo video that went up this week. Wow!! As Paul pointed out, the Narrow Field...
A short prog/space rock jam that I recorded and mixed over the three day Memorial Day 2017 weekend. The guitar is my 305.
The Fleeting Hours, the Fleeting Years
A few new blues-rock tunes I wrote and recorded, using my McCarty with soapbars.
These P90s are fat sounding pickups.

Over fall 2015 and the holidays, end of 2015, I got the chance to record a couple of blues songs on which I played my McCarty with P90s.
Most recently, finished just a few days into 2016, is this song called "Psycho Ex". The rhythm and lead guitars are all the McCarty with P90s. The sustain and...
I just read this now. I briefly plugged in a John Mayer Strat a week ago. I agree, it is a really fine guitar, with a very cool version of the classic Strat tone from the Big Dipper pickups.
At this price range, you might be able to get a 1990's EG.
PRS's first interpretation of the Strat design, I think they can be found at about $1,000, if you can find one. There aren't many out there. I've never plugged one in. Maybe there is an owner here who can comment on how well they do...
I did some more tone comparing last night. If I get a chance over the weekend maybe I'll put up another shootout. I pulled out the maple fretboard 305 and compared it to the DC3. The DC3 does have a little more snap in the attack, and the 305 has a smoother more compressed attack.
Something...
Thanks. That McCarty with P90's is just stunning in person. I saw that one hanging at GC a few years ago, and it's one of those guitars where that burst finish kind of glows. I'd see all the guitars on the wall and this one (and a couple of others) would catch my eye because they kind of put off...
Here is a link to a neck pickup tone shootout I recorded this evening. The Groovemaster is the third guitar heard, then the DC3 is the fourth.
The first and second guitars are guitars with a Duncan Alnico Pro II Strat pickup, and then a Lace Sensor green (voiced like Texas Special).
After the...
Over Thanksgiving I stopped at the local GC and saw a DC3 hanging in the used guitar area. For a used guitar, this one was really clean. A little light swirling on the pickguard, otherwise not a mark or a scratch anywhere.
At first I was saddened that I'd have to pass on this guitar. I'm still...
I just got done mixing a remake of a song that a friend and I wrote in 2005. I redid most of the guitar parts when remaking the song, and this time around, I used my PRS 25th Anniversary McCarty Narrow Field for the clean guitars in the instrumental intro and the verses. I used my sunburst 305...
That is interesting that Duncan makes the P-90's in PRS guitars. I didn't know that.
I picked up a McCarty with P90's a few months ago and love the smoky bluesy tone. It's a keeper.
I have another guitar with a 25 1/2" scale and bolt on neck with the Duncan P90's and it sounds snappier than...
I'd tell the seller that PRS will be glad to build him another one. It's just a McCarty with rosewood neck and sunburst finish.
If he didn't think it's worth keeping just because of tarnished hardware, you're right: his loss, your gain.
You can replace tarnished hardware. And now he can order...
I think this more or less sums up my opinion on the original question as well.
The PRS guitars I have are not private stock, they're just what came out of the Maryland shop that I found hanging at Guitar Center or other guitar stores. But they are so flawless, so meticulously crafted, they...
