Zach Myers volume controls

Hi,

Since a few days I'm a happy owner of a Zach Myers SE MB (not the 594 Model) and there is one thing I would like know:

Those two volume controls, I thought they are there for mixing the neck and bridge pickups.
Now I found out, that they are not independent: if I use both pickups, it is sufficient to turn one volume control down to zero to
shut off both of them.
I thought that sense of the two pots is to have two *independent* controls (although I don't know if this makes sense).

Ís this wiring common practice?
