Dark Side Of The Moon/Total Eclipse Of The Sun

Yeah. It's tempting, though, especially as I haven't used my film cameras in a while. But as a friend said in a recent video meeting (same one going to the Moon Pie / Sunny Delight party), "Eh, NASA can take better photos of it than I can."

I like the time lapse idea. I may try that. Not pointed at the sun, but the general scene. Thanks.

👍

The other comment I heard was with less than four minutes in totality, there's not a lot of time to experiment.

I went out one night this winter w/my DSLR to shoot some of the meteor showers. Have to review the pics again, but the initial results weren't great. I got a lot of stars not visible to the naked eye, but no meteors, even though I know I was doing exposures when they crossed.

I've observed two solar eclipses in my lifetime. Neither of which we were in the path of totality. But it was pretty cool. The most recent one we looked through welding glass (it was a work day and we had a welding rig in the shop), but the home made cardboard box viewer actually worked better. First time was when several of us got marooned on a snowmobile trip and we watched from the middle of the frozen river through our goggles. Yeah I know, pretty dumb but we suffered no ill effects.
I'm not sure if there will be any point to try seeing this one up where we are. Which incidentally, for those of you that don't know exactly where Athabasca AB is, we are roughly halfway between Dallas Texas and the North Pole....🤣 I can drive I-15 across/through Montana in less time than I can get from home to the US border.;)

I’ll take some photos at the early end to see how they look with my sun filter and 400mm lens and perhaps the doubler. I’ll reserve judgement on how long I track through the camera.

I caught meteors by accident trying to get the right exposure for a crescent moon. The lens was open long enough to see the meteor track

If I put a bright spotlight directly in your eyes, you may not be able to identify a basketball as I move it towards and in front of the spotlight, because of the intensity of the light. The basketball may only appear as a shadow. but I can still take that basketball and bounce it, or pull it over far enough to the side that you see the orange and recognize what it is. But with intense light behind it and it in proximity, it may only appear as a dark spot that's blocking the light from your field of vision.
NEWSFLASH: The solar system has been debunked. Story at 11.

I live in a small town in the mountains of upstate NY and all I've heard about the eclipse is negative like top off your gas tanks, get your shopping done with extra water and pickup your scripts early with enough to last you a few months, sounds like the "Zombie Apocalypse" to me. One more thing remember don't stare at it or you'll go blind! (Didn't your mom say the same thing about porn?) One more thought Is this God mooning the Earth?

What is the philosophy of intellectual dishonesty you ask?

Intellectual dishonesty refers to a lack of integrity in the pursuit or communication of ideas, knowledge, or information. It involves intentionally misrepresenting, omitting, or manipulating facts, arguments, or evidence to deceive or mislead others.

I think it is prudent not to be on the road around where there will be totality. Only because of the extra volume of traffic and the likelihood that some of the people on the road will be paying more attention to the sky than the road.

I chatted with my son-in-law today. Him and my Daughter are in the path where it is going to get very dark, maybe total darkness. The told me they have had warnings out about high traffic and things like gas outages due to the number of people they are expecting in the area. It sounds like hotels are selling out.

And, many streetlights are triggered by time of day, not darkness, so there will be places that are usually well lit at night that will be really dark for a few minutes.
