I’ve owned this guitar for about 12 years and while it plays like butter, it is very particular to the type of amp used to get a decent sound.
I believe there are McCarty pups in it. i switch back and forth from the piezo to regular pups but when rocking it out with no piezo, it just falls flat...
I have a HBII 20th Anniversary piezo with the original McCarty arch top pups.
They are not the best for rock and overdrive.
Would the new 58/15’s be a better option for that? I love the guitar’s piezo sound and use it mostly for that.
Thanks!
Wow! Have owned my 20th Anniversary Hollowbody II piezo for about 12 years and never tried running both outputs. In fact I taped off the piezo after sticking the cable in there too many times for gigs. Will have to try this for recording.
Have an older 20th Anniversary HB II. Afraid to pull out Piezo guts. Seems to hang up inside when I do. The E string goes out then comes back after fiddling with the electronics. Any ideas?
You will be happy that you got the 100. The 50 needs an upgraded speaker to get the best out of it.
And yes, they are getting hard to find. This will be a successful line for Roland. Priced may go up?
Hi Huggy,
Thanks for the advice. I have an Eastman ER1 that is my real Jazz box, an amazing but unique guitar, that puts out an archtop like tone. Will be replacing Asian Kent Armstrong with a Manlius pup.
I really want to like the HB II. Plays like butter but as you described it is not...
Hi David,
Thanks, will try adjusting the height. Am going to put some 10 or 11 flat wounds on it also. Everyone seems to love these Archtop pups so it must be me. I use a Polytone mini brute so I hope the height and new strings help.
for years I bought used McCarty pups on eBay and put them into my Guild Bluesbird, Viking II Deluxe 335 copy, etc. I am now finding them to sound a bit thin. Looking for a fuller sounding fatter pickup. Any ideas?

I have tried really hard to bond with my HB II 20th Anniversary but have not succeeded yet. Will try some flat wound 10s before giving up. Find it to be thin sounding. Have thought about new pups or selling it.
Any suggestions?
Ok here goes, try a Boss Katana 50 for $199.00. I play my Hollowbody II through a Polytone Mini Brute and Carr Rambler but wanted something lighter. On a whim I tried one of these, bought it and love it. 24 lbs, cheap and great tone.
My two cents.
