Wood library specs but not a wood library?

Hey all I bought from GC a 2021 Custom 24 core. From the pics it was obvious that isent wasn't a base core she has a ebony fretboard, hybrid hardware 10 top on headstock and a flame maple neck. So I assumed a Wood Library.

It's still in shipping but I sent the SN to PRS and they said not a WL. Is this common? Maybe a dealer order?

Here's the email response.

Thank you for contacting PRS Guitars.

This serial number is
not listed as a wood library model.

Serial# 21 03xxxx is a 2021
Custom 24, with a Quilted Maple 10-top, Maple neck with a Wide-Thin profile, Ebony fretboard with bird inlays, gen 3 tremolo bridge, 85/15 TCI treble and bass pickups, finished in Charcoal Burst, with hybrid hardware.

I hope this information finds you well. We appreciate your interest in PRS.

Have a great day,

Interesting. They do special runs of things at times. It is possible that it may have been a dealer order. They did have the Artist package where you could select different types of woods. They have had different names for the different programs they have had where you could select different things. If memory serves, they had a couple of different designations for the Artist pack. One is the old original designation where it meant you got a higher grade top wood and gold hardware and some other high end appointments like the headstock overlay. I think that turned into a program where you could select types of woods for the various parts of the guitar and the program may have kept the same name. I am not sure what years this ran through. A Google search would probably yield some clarification on it.

Congrats on the new axe though!

I had the same thing happen to me in 2017. Bought a custom 24 new from Dave’s with a quilt 10 top, satin flame neck, swamp ash back and custom color but not a wood library. I emailed PRS about it and they said it could have possibly started off as a wood library but the color didn’t come out the way they liked so they sold it as a one off.

There are special runs and there is also off the cuff stuff they make that they make available to dealers. Some have unique colors, or slightly altered wood choices like an ebony board.

I am not sure what it is like now, but I know for a fact in 2019, I could have put in a special order for a 594 with an ebony board. PRS said no problem.

My 2016 McCarty has a rosewood neck and ebony board. I thought that meant Artist package. PRS confirmed it was just a special Dealer spec. So, yes it happens more often than I thought. Hopefully you enjoy the guitar and then the designation should not matter. Good luck.

Just curious. Want to know what it is. I got Lucky and it was sold as a regular 24 not as a Wood Library. But if I paid the extra $ I'd be pretty upset.

A Wood Library isn’t necessarily more expensive. WL just means a dealer run that’s different in some way than a Core. A satin WL is cheaper than an otherwise identical Core. They’re made on the same production line by the same staff as Core guitars.

You do see PRSi out there every so often with features that are not listed as available. I have an '01 Singlecut in Emerald with a green back, that I've been assured by knowledgeable friends was supposed to have a black back. Likewise a Paul's Guitar with "Artist" birds rather than brushstroke birds. I also have a trans black SC594 with a stunning quilt top, what looks like an ebony board, and hybrid hardware. I think that one was intended to be Wood Library, but there's a brown spot in the black behind the tailpiece. I suspect that downgraded it to a Core 10-top, which is what I bought it as.
