What are your thoughts? I just upgraded my HP Touchsmart from 7 today. Haven't used it much yet. Skipped 8 since I heard a lot of less than great things about it. Figured it would be a good upgrade since the touch screen stuff with 7 wasn't awesome.

I'll have to wait to hear what others have to say. I hated 8. Glad I still have 7 on one PC.

We just got a new computer on a Costco back to school special. It came with 8 but we upgraded to 10 immediately. I've hardly used it so far, but I would caution you, they collect a lot of your info. I would suggest going through your settings and following these instructions.

I'm going to a big demo tech thing tomorrow and will know more about it after that.

Got Win 7 on my music PC and was always happy with it. Had 8 on a cheap PC we had downstairs and hated it.

Just upgraded the laptop from 7 to 10. Uses a little more RAM but overall it seems ok. Not entirely convinced there's any real need to upgrade 7 at the moment if you have that. If you have 8 the do it as it is a definate improvement.

I'm likely to stick with 7 on my music PC unless I see any really useful improvements. I'll spend time with it on the laptop for a few weeks to get a feel.

The real negative is that Microsoft have gone down the NSA rout and thinks it's perfectly fine to collect a shed load of data. However, you can set 10 up to be more 'private' during the setup procedure. Just be sure to use custom setup rather than express. It can all be changed afterwards though.

I bypassed the queue for the download but I forgot how. Might not be a queue now...?

BTW... If you're avoiding 10 because of the amount of user data it wants to collect then bad news. Microsoft are bringing that to 7 and 8 via updates.

The only problem with upgrading is that after a certain amount of time, Microsoft will discontinue support for the operating system it considers "obsolete". This has always been their business model. They are going to get your money.

Yeah, I thought I read windows 7 was no longer getting support(could be wrong). I heard, for the most part, 10 was pretty good. It was a free upgrade. I figured I'd wait a couple weeks to let the bugs get worked out and see what people were saying.

7 will be supported for a while yet. 2020 - so another 5 years. XP is finished and I suspect Vista will be soon.

Agree with waiting until the bugs are ironed out. I for one do not want to be a "beta site" for Microsoft. I have heard good things from my IT friends however. Eventually I will upgrade.

I have 7 on my desktop which I'm still under the impression was a mistake on my part by upgrading, I should have stayed with XP. I have a laptop that has 8 on it and I have no 10 and I don't think I ever will. One saving grace for me was finding Classic Shell (free) for 7 which basically allows you to choose the classic type desktop as per Win 32 onwards. There are versions for 7, 8 and 10 give it a try, you can always remove it if you don't like it but I can't see you won't if you like XP. It's a monstrous source of bewilderment to me that MS are catering so much for the touch screen world. If anyone touches my screen they'll get a slap!!

Advancement in technology. Just about everything new is touch screen, it has it's advantages.

I don't get touch screens for PC's, you constantly have to clean the damn thing. There are no advantages for anyone touching my PC screen:box:

I do get touch screen phones though, I love my iPhone but, again, the screen needs constant cleaning.

Upgraded a couple of weeks ago to "10', no problems at all on my laptop. As far as them getting your data, go into settings and turn that stuff off. ENJOY!!!

Definitely has it's advantages but it's far from a perfect technology. I use my iPad and android phone for general browsing, email, etc and for that touch screen is perfectly fine. But there are times it becomes a frustrating experience and I go to something that has a traditional keyboard and mouse.

I have a decent sized couple of 1080p monitors for my music PC and a traditional keyboard (musical and other) and mouse setup. I wouldn't change that for touch screen unless it had major advantages.

Be glad you didn't stay with XP. It's terrifying how many XP machines there are in the world still, yet it's been out of support for over a year. Every day they find new vulnerabilities, not just in desktop OSes but in embedded software in things like cars and medical equipment. Having out of date software connected to the Internet is basically begging some hacker somewhere to come along and steal all your most intimate information, or take over your stuff in ways that are not detectable.

The only problem with upgrading is that after a certain amount of time, Microsoft will discontinue support for the operating system it considers "obsolete". This has always been their business model. They are going to get your money.
That is no longer their business model. I learned this today at this information session I attended. Instead of saving up this change and that change and in three years they release Windows 11, they're going to periodically make these updates available. This is, and I quote the Microsoft rep I listened to today, the last major Microsoft OS release we will ever see, or at least in the company's foreseeable future. All new features and changes will be additions to this OS.

Why did they make Windows 10 a free upgrade? Here are the reasons I can see:
1) They want you to subscribe to their cloud based services (Office 365, Sky Drive, etc)
2) they want to provide a platform that easily integrates the products they offer, while making the use of other, non-Microsoft products difficult, like Apple has done for decades (see #1)
3) They want you to eventually become a Microsoft "person" or "fanboy" like Apple has done for decades (see numbers 1 and 2)

I am one of the few that actually enjoys Windows 8, however you need to, at a minimum install Classic Start for it to function well. Its a free download from ninite.com and will change your life! We haven't started playing around with Windows 10, and I doubt I will move to it any time soon with the stuff I do in Cisco land.

I upgraded both my laptop and my workstation to Win10 from Win7 Ultimate/Pro and am very happy. Win 7 will be supported for quite some time as it used with many businesses, so I can't image support ending in less than 5 years. One thing, if you use WMC it's no longer in Win10, just a thought as I loved it for many years.

***WARNING***

I upgraded a couple of weeks ago on my work laptop. I use VPN software a fair amount. When I finished the first upgrade I had no internet access on Ethernet or wireless. Not sure if recent patches have solved the issue or not but I had to revert to 8.1, then remove all VPN software, and all my virtual NICs (Hyper-V) before upgrading again.
That being said I seem to think that the boot time is a bit longer. Edge browser is quick but lacks compatibility to things like Hangouts, some work related websites etc. All my apps are working including DAW. And... finally I am rid of that horrible charms bar!
Win!
