I'd personally love to see another single coil PRS!
Looking back over the PRS line there have been a fairly decent amount of attempts at a single coil PRS, we had the original Studio model, the original EG model(s), the SAS (kinda), the 513,the 305, the DC3, and even the soapy models (if were dare include p-90's)... We can't say they aren't tryin'!
What's the problem then? Why aren't these things selling enough to keep them in the line up? I think it would be pretty safe to assume that none of these aforementioned models would have been dropped if people were buying them, it's not like PRS doesn't want that segment of the market so why aren't we eating those models up? Is it due to the fact that the majority of customers that make up the PRS market are humbucker people? I don't know.
I own two core line and one SE PRS that I have modified to offer me "real" (i.e. not split humbucker) single coil tones, that for me are preferable to what PRS has offered in their models meant to address this market. I don't dislike "split" tones at all, and quite frankly some of the buckers that PRS has put out like the 53/10 and DII are brilliant sounding as singles but sometimes you (I) just need (or at least think you/I do) an actual single coil.
"So mister foofy pants, why don't you own any of those models if you like single coils so much?" You may ask?
Welp, here's the thing:
I want a PRS that looks like a PRS but sounds like a Tele and a Strat. No, not one or the other but both, and it better be fancy lookin' without that wonky plastic pick guard, it has to be all carved up and sexy felling, and I want a wang-bar, and I want the old PRS neck joint... and a hamburger, and french fries, and pizza salad, and........:bawling: That's right, Imma baby b!tch, and impossible to please. That's why.
But PRS has been soooooo close to what I think I want, and then there's always a wrinkle.
The 305 should be my end all be all... But it isn't. There's something "not there" for me. I can't quite nail it down but I believe it may have to do with the set neck, it's just too "smooth" sounding. I notice the same thing in my buddies original Studio and my beloved KL33 modded with a Lace Silver in the neck. All three of those guitars sound really great with the neck single into an overdriven amp... But played clean.. ugh, They just don't have "it".
The DC3... My eyes won't let my brain consider it. It's shallow, I know, but I have absolutely zero lust in my heart for one. As a fetish object it does not get me revved up and the all important neck joint that probably does sound spiky like I wish the set necks did offends my personal aesthetic. Perhaps it does to others as well since it's gone.
Ooh.. The Swamp Ash Narrowfield! Damn that's what I'm talkin' about! So sexy, sexy, sexy!!! I can even get down with that neck joint (in theory having never played one) but, but, but.... Narrowfield hum buckers? Ehh.. I'm afraid. That's it. I'm afraid of buying a guitar with hum buckers when I'm lookin' for singles... And what if I dig it but wanna try something else in there twenty years down the road if/when my tastes change? I'm still thinkin' about one of these and it doesn't help seeing 'em for sale cheap! There's a white one on CL in my market with a maple board as we speak.
Enter the CE: That old forgotten would be "cheap-o" guitar that turned into a hidden gem is almost perfect for single coils!!!! Mahogany or Alder, 22 or 24, almost doesn't matter. Now that's what I want a guitar to feel like in my arms and under my fingers! My ghetto-pimp CE with a tele neck pup and a diamond encrusted S superglued to the top... Make one of those! Sheet... I love that guitar. I'd probably love the ol' SAS too, just yank the buckers and slap some singles in there!
Oops! Err...uh.. I see I'm rambling here. My apologies to everybody who reads this.
