I'd been monitoring Reverb and other places for a "deal" on some form of PRS bass with a maple fretboard for my wife: her two SEs have Indian (?) Rosewood, and the Bass-5 is Brazzy (but she doesn't play it - the 5 strings are still a bit too daunting).
Decided to finally pull the trigger on one I had been stalking on Reverb, after @sergiodeblanc messaged me with a good deal on a (rosewood FB) EB-4.
This is an early Christmas present for her - my intent had been to time the delivery while she was out of town last weekend, so I could check it out and then hide it, but that didn't happen, so she was home when it got delivered - and I didn't want her thinking I secretly got myself another PRSi!
These are seller's pics - the bass got delivered right before dinner last night, and I didn't let her open it until we went to practice right after, so no opportunity to grab my own pics.
She really likes the neck profile - she says it feels thinner/smaller overall compared to the Kestrel & Kingfisher, and I agree, it looks and feels thinner and less bulky, even though the width looks pretty well the same. I need to get out the calipers this evening.
She, like me, has small hands, so the smaller profile is a nice treat for her.
@Shawn@PRS , are there any official specs on neck profiles for PRS basses like there are for "regular" guitars? The website doesn't say much that I can find.
It sounded good - we didn't have time for any tonal comparisons to the other basses, but from what I gather it is supposed to do the F J-bass tones well. We are looking to emulate any particular tone, in general (we are definitely our own thing, musically), so it isn't like we need her playing to sound exactly like the bass on any particular well-known hit song.
I would like to understand what the mini-toggle does - it seems to have a similar effect as a single coil mode for HB pickups, but these pups are already SC...I did read something about some form of EQ circuit. Need to open up the back and look at the guts, see if there is some sort of battery.
Lack of birds was the only compromise here...of course, that means if I find a nice EB-4 (or -5) with birds at a great price, I might have to snap that up...
And to round out her collection, it seems fair to get a Bass-4 and a Grainer 4 or 5 at some point.
