Why is there no Artist Package option for The CE and Silver Sky?

i think that many would like to chose a flamed maple neck or maybe a Maple Fingerboard on an Ce or an Silver Sky. So why isn’t it an option?

At least for the SS, it is an "Artist Package" of sorts already, being largely spec'd by the artist himself. JM expressed that he didn't want the flame maple, just solid colors.

Whether it would be awesome or not, I think that its because of where the 'Bolt-on' neck guitars are positioned in the PRS market. Bolt-ons, which includes the Silver Sky, are positioned as a 'tier' below and with price cutting details to keep them within that price bracket. It seems that PRS are no longer using CE as a category on their Website but use Bolt-on as the description to categorise all their 'bolt-on' neck models which makes sense with the addition of the Silver Sky to the line-up of guitars.

I wonder if they would do a 'special' run of CE or SS models for a dealer if they requested a flame maple or even a roasted maple neck. Flame maple on a Silver Sky could be wasted if they don't do something to really bring out the flame. Satin plain necks certainly won't, a least not to the same standard as a stained gloss neck like you get on wood library+ models that stain the neck in the same colour scheme as the body to really bring the pattern out. Maybe they could use a complimentary colour to the Silver Sky's body. If they don't really do anything, it will be like the Flame Maple body blanks before they use water to show how much flame the wood actually has and in my opinion - a waste.

I would be interested in a CE24 Semi Hollow with an upgrades maple top and hybrid hardware

No problem! They’ll build you one in Private Stock. You can put anything you want on it.

Then you’ll really sink some dough into that CE!

Yeah. I agree. Might be a tad overkill. I should be looking at a wood library 594 with maple neck.

You may indeed need one! All fully functional PRS players need one - except Sergio, who’s, you know, Sergio. And perhaps others, who are not Sergio.

Here’s mine, and I love it (pic taken by Jack Gretz, my dealer):

That natural binding is so effective with this awesome color...She's a stunner Les.

Regarding the SS, it would be awesome to allow maple fretboards or flame... if only the artist would only allow it.

I’m sure that they have asked. Sounds like the answer was NOPE.

Makes me sad.

But maybe somebody will change their mind in the future so that I can finally buy my maple fretboard SS.

There have been rumors of a maple board SS in the future, but they still seem to be just rumors.

PRS and perhaps John Mayer really seem to have the Silver Sky marketing/branding on lock down, the PTC won’t even paint one a different color than the ones offered, nor will they mod them or deviate from the stock formula.

They’re kinda rolling like a restaurant that won’t allow substitutions for this one, which is fine, PRS has had a long(ish) history of taking that stance.

The reissue CE on the other hand.... I still kinda don’t “get” how, why, or where it’s supposed to fit in within the PRS hierarchy. It made sense before SE and S2 Customs came out, and offered a different flavor of wood combinations before they started the option of putting maple necks on everything.... IDK... I’m sure it makes financial sense.

Maybe it’s because the Artist Package is a $1300 upcharge. You’d have to be a very...what’s the word I’m looking for...’special’ customer to spec a $1,300 option on a $1,999 guitar. ;)

I would’ve been one of the customers for one if they were made like my old ones. I greatly prefer my CEs to Customs.

Hell yeah! All the PS CEs that I’ve seen over the years look like killer guitars.

I believe that may be the first time someone has ever alluded to me being fully functional. :p

Regarding the SS, I heard from a reliable source that it is the artist... and that’s his prerogative (cue the Bobby Brown music) cause its his specs. The guitars are selling VERY well as stock as designed so maybe it’s not a huge deal right now. And maybe, one day, if it becomes a bigger deal and there’s more reason to implement changes, then perhaps more options will be made available. But apparently not right now.

It’s kind of humorous even thinking about some kind of artist package for the SS.

The competition is essentially Fender’s Custom Shop, where the options are the color, and whether you want the finish checked and/or beaten with chains, have the hardware ‘aged’ to be all rusty, and finally have it ‘custom’ worked over with a cheese grater to make it look old. And when you get it home, have to take the neck off to adjust the relief.

I know, you guys loooove that faux-vintage look. Hey, I’m just sayin’ it strikes me as a little odd to pay extra for something you could do just by playing it out for a while, but this probably isn’t the thread to discuss that.
