Why Do Most PRS Guitars Ship with 10-Gauge Strings?

9s are too floppy for me on the PRS scale. 10s is a bit tight, but works. I think a 9.5 would be great.

I'm on drop c tuning with .0115 - .015 - .019p - .030 - .042 - .058 on it. I love Stringjoy because I can customize a set.
It’s important when discussing string gauge to note any down or alternate tunings used. Even a half step down totally changes the feel of any gauge, and these days you’ve got guitars tuned anywhere from standard to bass land .

I keep 10's on my PRS, Fenders, and my Les Paul. I keep 11's on my Gibson and Gretsch hollow bodies. I keep them in standard tuning and have no issues bending. Been playing for almost 50 years and 9's are just too floppy for me.

I like a little tension when bending the strings. 9's don't provide that extra effort I am so used to get that pressure bends for blues.
I also need the same gauge for my guitars as with heavier or lighter resistance would make my lead playing over bend the strings sharp or flat.

I have 10s on all my guitars, no matter the scale length. However I spend most of my time tuned to Eb!

Every guitar I buy gets a new set of strings and a set up immediately anyway, so I don’t really care what the guitar ships with.

My SE Standard 24-08 came with 9s. I generally play with 9s but i bought several sets of 9.5s so I may try those next, just for a change.

It's pure fashion. I remember the big 9 -> 10 shift some time in the 90s, my first PRS Core came with 9s. Everyone was using 9s at the time, except the jazz guys who were using flatwound bridge stays.

I think there was a Beato episode where he says he thinks it was when SRV got super popular and people thought you had to use heavier strings to be a 'real' guitarist.

PRS just puts one whatever is popular to make his customers happy.

My SE Custom 2408 came with 9's. I think this is normally what they have by default at the other factory. Was doing some window shopping on Sweetwater during the holidays, and the Zach Meyer 594 SE caught my eye, which I noticed also has the light gauge. Only exception I know of so far is the Silver Sky SE - that one has 10's

I guess 10s are an industry standard.
My Strandberg also shipped with 10s as well. Every Suhr I tried had 10s as well.
I don't complain, since that's all what I used for decades now.
