Why Are Guitarists Such ... ?

went and saw a good blues/rock band tonite.
this band was really, really good. fabulous guitar player.
for some reason, there were three local guitar players showing up.
you can always tell ... they are the guys that scope out the gear and sneer.
... and whine and critize all nite long.

why can't they just enjoy the band?

Maybe it's because there are so many of us (compared to, say, bass players), and so few gigs, that if we're onstage, we feel as if all the other guitar players are after our gig, and if we're in the audience, we want the other guy's gig. I'm certainly not that way--if I'm digging someone's playing, I believe in letting them know about it. Drummers are always instant buddies with one another--why can't we guitar players be more like that?

it's kinda pathetic.
this guy was the best i've seen around here in years ... alsolutely smoked all the haters and i enjoyed myself.
hey ... good for him, and the bass player was smoooooth.
i bought the band a couple of shots, that's all i can do.
the pie is not finite, it's infinite ... lots of room for everyone.

and, "I hear a hum coming from that bulb, the one I put in is dead quite." or "Those CF bulb are too harsh, you have use a NOS bulb in that fixture."

I think sometimes guys forget it's about the music.

Not all of us are that way. I'm not. Small minds, hearts, attitudes... Small people can be found in all social groups, but hopefully they're the exception rather than the rule.

Guitar players make me chuckle. I've heard so many criticisms of each other over the years - I usually gig on keys so everyone seems to give me their comments - but here's what the audiences invariably tell me after a show when I'm playing with a really good player who also has good tone, and who I think has done a great job on the gig:

"Too much guitar soloing, can't you get that guy to play shorter solos? No one wants to hear that."

"You guys are good but I hated the guitar player stepping all over the singer."

"The band was great but the guitar was too loud."

You can't win. Everyone's a critic.

I sometimes form an opinion of a guitarist when I hear them but keep any opinions to myself unless asked. Tends to be if something really stands out in a positive or negative way. As a player i'm going to notice little things that a casual listener / observer may not.

I've had good constructive feedback off a few guitarists and.... Yep, there's been a few ar*eholes who have made a little dig.

i can say that 99 out of a hundred times someone is critical (As in abusive) on Y'tube they don't have a vid of them playing. It does perhaps offer an insight to what some do think but won't say face to face in public. I can't be doing with the 'competition' aspect of playing. If the crowd in general appreciate what you do then that's all that matters.

I spent years obsessing about so many minute details with gear... through all the years with rock bands and even when running sound for other bands... until a few years ago I started running sound for an acoustic pop trio. When they started, they had some of the cheapest off the shelf gear, but they rocked the place with it (It helped that all three can sing and harmonize). They appreciated the nuances I was able to pull out of their performances with the mics and speakers I was using, but I was simultaneously blown away by how much MUSIC was coming from their hands. They literally could have made music with cardboard boxes and rubber bands.

Since then, I've realized that the music doesn't depend on certain gear or that "it" sound. Those things are bonuses or icing on the cake. The gear can inspire a better performance from the musician, but the root of it all starts with the person playing the music.
