Which would you choose?

If you had a choice between an original Modern Eagle or a Paul's Dirty 100 - assuming price was the same, which would you choose?

Interested to hear from anyone who has played/owned both. Resale value/exclusivity also a factor.

I think they would both cover me musically - jazz, blues, rock, harder rock. So might be more of a question of what each does "better"

Anyways, thanks for your thoughts!

Not owned or even played either but MEs always give me major GAS. If it were a blind choice that's be my pick!

I'd get the Dirty 100 because I prefer the tone of mahogany necks.

Just a personal preference kinda thing.

I have no idea which is worth more, more exclusive, a better buy, etc. Not my thing to care about stuff like that. Note: Not implying in any way that it's somehow wrong to care about that stuff, I just don't let that enter into the equation. I'm into the "tone, playability, looks" part of the deal. ;)

Whichever one you can get that has a trem. PRSs with trems just sound better IMO, regardless if you use a trem or not. Just the body routing and trem bridge/block give them a more woody sound to my ears. Coming from a guy who NEVER uses the trem, but has sold every stop tail PRS I owned for trem versions.

You can't go wrong with either guitar, but what style of music will you primarily play with it? If you're looking for a modern/progressive sounding guitar, go for the 7 string. If you're looking for something to primarily fill a vintage role, go for the Semi Hollow. Although I've heard Emil Werstler play Gypsy Jazz Swing on a 7 string, so what do I know? :)

Hi Shawn, I think this answer should be in my thread but I'll answer here :) (apologies to the OP). I play anywhere from blues to heavy rock, so any guitar, I get, has to be versatile. In my opinion, both guitars would suit me well!!! The 7-string would be somewhat more appealing due to fact that I'm learning Staind songs which are easier to play to the tuning of G#,C#,G#,C#,F#,A#,D#. However, the resonant tones that comes from the semi-hollow are nothing short of amazing!!! As for Mr. Werstler, I have the pleasure joining in his twice-a-week Q&A sessions on a different website, and he does play blues and jazz on his semi hollow and his 7. Excellent guy to learn guitar from!!!

Very tough decision to make because both are exceptional guitars. I own a dirty 100 and have had several ME1 with Brazilian necks in my possession for long enough to get a good feel for them.
I am a huge fan of Brazilian necks. I love the feel and the deep earthy tones you get from them. That tone, however, isn't to everyone's taste all of the time.
The dirty 100 can be used for anything. The day I bought mine, I played a number of limited edition guitars and there was never any question that the dirty 100 was going home with me. You can't go wrong with it as a guitar to be played.
I am not an expert on value, but all of the ME1s I have declined to buy were priced higher than what I paid for my dirty 100, which suggests a higher resale value.

Personally, without hearing either of them, I'd go with the Modern Eagle, if for no other reason than the BRW neck. You won't go wrong with either.

No, I hear you, I normally don't care about that either - except the prices of these particular guitars, and the whole BRW thing makes it a concern.

I would be splurging on either of these, I don't need another guitar, just a huge GAS attack lately.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm indecisive and will keep thinking about it. I need to go to my local pusher and play some more RW neck guitars - I love them on some guitars and no so much on others. But man that warm, woody thing you get on the neck pickup is all kinds of yummy. :top:

Yup, I get that.

Oddly enough, I could have gotten a BRW Tonare Artist for a lot less than the maple Tonare PS I had built.

But I was looking for a particular sound. So I ignored the financial aspect and plowed ahead. In this case the tone I wanted was worth more to me than the money. Not too bad a tradeoff.

I do like RW necks, and have had three models with that option. But ultimately I found the 'hog necks more to my tastes. The good news is that you can't really make a mistake, both models are super-nice.

If you ever love a rosewood neck, you will be crazy for the braz ME. PRS knows how to treat a braz neck right.

Modern Eagle

I chose the Modern Eagle
